The Inca trail

The famous Inca Trail is a four-day hike, which terminates at Machu Picchu, and is regarded by many as the highlight of their trip to Peru. This scenic trail is often more demanding than what many people are expecting, but it's also rewarding and one of the most popular things to do in Peru

History of Peru

Peruvian history encompasses a rich diversity of cultures and significant events, among them:
  • Ancient civilisations. Peru was home to pre-Inca civilizations such as the Norte Chico culture and the Moche culture.
  • Inca Empire. In the 15th century, the Incas established a vast empire that encompassed much of South America. Machu Picchu is a remarkable vestige of this era.
  • Spanish Conquest. In 1532, Francisco Pizarro led the Spanish conquest and captured the last Inca emperor.
  • Independence. In 1821, General Jose de San Martin proclaimed the independence of Peru.

The 'White City' of Arequipa is built from volcanic stone

Surrounded by four imposing volcanoes, Arequipa is known as the ‘white city’ due to it’s unique architecture, consisting mostly of a white volcanic stone called sillar. After a devastating earthquake in the 19th century, the city was rebuilt using plenty of the same white stone to maintain it’s beauty and name of the ‘white city’.

The festival, which occurs throughout the country, people perform games with water, talcum powder, picapica, dances, music and lots of joy. The main cities where it is celebrated are Arequipa, Catacaos, Puno, Cusco, Ayacucho and Cajamarca with many colors and dances. The entire population participates in the festival. Carnival in Peru is celebrated to inaugurate the beginning of Lent. In most countries, Carnival is a crazy party intended to release excess energies before the moderate time of Lent and enjoy the delicacies that Lent forbids such as eating meat. Carnival is also celebrated with many parades and dance groups taking to the streets under a shower of foam sprayed from the audience and sometimes even fellow dancers!

Carnival is a favorite vacation for children because local tradition essentially turns the city into a giant water fight. On this day everyone has free license to drench anyone else by almost any means. Today this means water guns, water balloons, buckets of water and sprayable foam that comes in tin bottles. Children take to the streets, waging war on anyone who comes within range. Adults abandon their paperwork and run like their children through the streets in revenge for a shooting.

Creole music

The coast is the most influenced by Spanish culture, combines traditional European rhythms like the waltz and polka with different rhythms, especially from Africa. Current Creole music emerges in late nineteenth century as part of the process of social transformation experienced by the city of Lima, visiting different states to the present.

Peruvian independence day

  • On 28 July Peru celebrates its Independence Day. July 28th is the official celebration, which continues into the 29th with many concerts and festivities organised by local governments.
  • While independence from Spain was secured at the Battle of Ayacucho on 9 December 1824 in a massive rout of the Spanish army by the Peruvian army, official independence did not come until 1826.

Weather conditions can vary, so it is important to check the weather forecast for the specific region you wish to visit, but it is recommended to bring light, comfortable clothing, sunscreen and a light jacket for cool nights.

Peru has a diverse climate due to its varied geography that includes coasts, mountains and jungles. In general it has a temperate and humid climate, thanks to the cold Peruvian ocean current.

The feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria is very traditional in different towns of Peru. The event is celebrated in Arequipa, Lima and Ayacucho, but the biggest, most joyful and traditional is in the city of Puno. The festival represents the largest cultural, musical, dance and religious manifestation of Peru for the amount of symbols and artistic and cultural manifestations of the Quechua, Aymara and mestizo cultures. It was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 27, 2014.

More than 170 groups of dancers and musicians with flashy costumes participate in this festival. There is a dance contest on February 2 at the Puno stadium. Afterwards, the celebrations continue throughout the city.

The Virgin of Chapi is recognized as the patron saint of Arequipa and every year a pilgrimage is made with her devotees in the town of Polobaya, 60 kilometers from the city of Arequipa. The feast also attracts the faithful from different regions of Peru. In addition to pilgrimages, the event features processions and gastronomic fairs. In 1985, Pope John Paul II crowned the image of the saint. The festivity of the Virgin of Chapi is one of the oldest religious ceremonies in Peru. The first record of its existence dates back to 1655 and by 1709 the image already had a legion of faithful. Since then, this tradition has been transforming along with society and its popular fervor.

The Feast of the Virgin of Chapi is celebrated on May 1 in Arequipa.Several Quechua-speaking women heard a voice that they attributed to the image of Our Lady saying: "Chaypi, Chaypi" which means "Here, here". The wonderful event would have motivated the image to stay there and be known as "Our Lady of Chapi".

Inca Pisac

pread out on the mountains above the bustling colonial village of Pisac are several impressive Inca ruins known as Inca Pisac. The ruins include a military citadel, religious temples, and individual dwellings, and overlooks the Sacred Valley. It is thought that Inca Písac defended the southern entrance to the valley and controlled a route which connected the Inca Empire with the border of the rain forest If you plan to visit Pisac, you would be well advised to go in the morning, as the site gets very crowded in the afternoon.

This festival is held in Trujillo or also known as the City of Eternal Spring, located about 450 km north of Lima and is the largest city on the northern coast of Peru. This city is characterized by its colonial center and the pre-Inca ruins of Chan-Chan. The marinera dance is a game of seduction, where the man imitates the movements of the Peruvian paso horse, while flirting with a woman who is characterized as flirtatious but arrogant. The man is dressed in a straw hat and poncho while the woman wears a silk blouse and long skirt. Both flutter white scarves as they move to the music of guitars and a local percussion instrument called the Peruvian Cajon.

During the month of January there are several exhibitions, shows and contests that culminate in the last week with a grand parade and the final Marinera dance contest. The Marinera dance has its origins in Hispanic and African styles, and is now a uniquely Peruvian tradition that celebrates Peru's multicultural culture.

The religious celebration of Corpus Christi takes place in different cities of the country, but it is mainly celebrated in Cusco, where the popular procession of the fifteen main saints and virgins of the city takes place 9 weeks after Holy Thursday.During this festivity, solemn processions are held in which the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession, that is, the consecrated host that represents the body of Christ. The Corpus Christi processions are a moment of deep devotion and joy for the Catholic faithful. This festival becomes a very special time of the year to get to know the traditional Peruvian culture.

In Cusco, the night before, the locals prepare and consume twelve typical Peruvian dishes. The Corpus Christi is a very colorful and traditional ceremony, it begins with the departure in procession of the fifteen religious figures and all gather at the Cathedral of Cusco. On this day, the squares are filled with people like the Plaza de Armas.

Lima

Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, as Ciudad de los Reyes. It became the capital and most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Following the Peruvian War of Independence, it became the capital of the Republic of Peru. Today, around one-third of the Peruvian population lives in the metropolitan area.

7 colours mountain

Vinicunca, also called Montaña de Siete Colores (Mountain of Seven Colors), is located in the Andes in the Cusco region of Peru, and until 2013 when the ice that had always covered the mountain melted away, the colors beneath were completely unknown. The colors look more natural in person, but they're not dull either

The highest navigable lake in the world

Lake Titiaca

Around the shoreline and islands on the lake, primitive indigenous villages and small towns can be seen. The reed boats made by the indigenous people and many of their ceremonies are popular sights for tourists. The Andean people refer to the lake as “The Sacred Lake”, thanks to the legend that states it is the place where the great god Viracocha appeared, walking across the waters.

Andean music

in every town, there are a variety of songs and dances. In Inca times, the word “taki” as used to refer simultaneously to both song and dance, as both activities were not separated from one another. Now, Andean music is blended, even most used instruments in the Andes is mestizo.

Cusco

It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western Hemisphere. Formerly the capital of the extensive Inca empire, it retains much of its highly crafted early stone architecture, which is typically preserved in the foundations and lower stories of Spanish colonial structures. Cuzco was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983

This religious celebration also takes place in Cusco on June 24 and has Inca origins. It takes place on the esplanade of the Sacsayhuaman fortress and pays homage to the Sun God, supreme symbol of worship in the Inca culture. Inti Raymi celebrates the winter solstice and is a complete reconstruction of a true Inca ceremony, or at least as close as possible to it, following the few descriptions left behind by the Spanish chroniclers. Hundreds of people disguised as priests, nobles, sun virgins and soldiers organize an elaborate procession and ritual throughout the city. The role of the Inca ruler Pachacuti is chosen only after extensive auditions. Approximately 750 actors participate in this festivity, who represent their ancestors with enthusiasm.

Inti Raymi, the Sun God Festival, is a massive celebration that begins in the Church of Santo Domingo, built on the ruins of the central Inca temple Qoricancha. It parades around the Plaza de Armas, and finally moves to the ruins of Saqsaywaman above the city.

You can swim with pink dolphins in the amazon

These unique creatures only live in the Amazon River basin! When born, they are actually grey and slowly turn pink as they get older, which results in dolphins in all different shades of pink. Having the opportunity to get up close and personal and swim with these friendly, ‘magical’ animals is a once in a lifetime opportunity..
