FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
CENSORSHIP
Thanks to our courageous people and army, we have achieved freedom and peace in our country. We can now express ourselves without fear of persecution. During the hard times of censorship, our people developed clever ways to overcome oppressive conditions by using metaphors and symbols in various types of art.
During the 'Estado Novo' era in Portugal, censorship was prevalent. The government controlled the flow of information and censored various forms of expression, including the press and the arts (such as music, theatre, and cinema). Additionally, the government established a police force called PIDE, whose role was to arrest individuals who expressed themseves or consumed forbidden materials. This way the regime would mantain their hold on power, becoming unchallenged.
"Pense-se o que se pensar sobre o que foram antes e depois desse gesto, ele foi único, singular e decisivo. Sem ele não haveria hoje uma Assembleia da República livre com vozes livres. Não há como esquecê-lo na escrita ou na reescrita da História "
