Properties of Chlorine ( Cl )
It is a chemical element that is present in a gaseous state in the environment. It is greenish yellow and is heavier than air. Chlorine has a pungent, irritating odor similar to bleach that is detectable at low concentrations. It is toxic, corrosive and irritating to the eyes and respiratory system
Uses of the neutral element or one of its ions or isotopes
Chlorine is used in the preparation of chlorides, chlorinated solvents, pesticides, polymers, synthetic rubbers and refigerants. Many others:
- It is used to get rid of the smell of putrefaction
- It is used as a disinfectant
- It is used in the treatment of drinking water to kill bacteria
- It is used to clean swimming pools
- It is used in the production of paper and paper products
- It is used as an antiseptic
