Graduation Requirements

What is a Credit?

Summary
A credit is a unit of measurement meant to track a student's academic progress. Students receive 1/2 of a credit for each semester of a course they take. Credits are assigned categories by subject (for example, if a student takes a year of Algebra I, they receive 1 math credit). Credits are considered elective credits if they belong to a subject that a student has already received enough credits in to graduate, or do not belong to a specific subject, like a world language.

Registering for Classes

Summary
Students typically register for classes at the beginning of February. Students have to fill out a paper form with they preferred classes, as well as three back-up options. Students also have to fill out an online schedule request on StudentVue. Counselors will visit classrooms in February, as well, to answer any questions students may have. Students typically find out their schedules a week before school begins.

Schedule Changes

Summary
In order for a student to change their schedule, they must complete a schedule change request form that the counseling department sends out at the beginning of each semester. Students have until the first Friday of the semester to add a class, the second Friday of the semester to drop a class for a study hall, and the fourth Friday of the semester for a level change (ex. if a student wanted to swap Honors Physics for Physics).

Who Plans Spirit Weeks?

Summary
With the exception of Survivor Week (planned by DECA) and Live Unified Week (planned by the Unified Club,) all spirit weeks are planned by the Student Senate. The Student Senate is an elected body of students, tasked with organizing spirit weeks and acting as a liason to the school administration.

Survivor Week

Summary
Survivor Week happens every year in early December. All students can apply to participate in daily challenges, such as walking barefoot, and sell things throughout the week to raise money for a charitable cause. Schedule Overview

Summary
Unlike the middle school, a typical schedule at OHS has 7 periods. Each period lasts 48 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while each period lasts 41 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The difference in period length is due to the addition of Spartan Hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays (see Spartan Hour for more information). Click below for a sample schedule.

Summary
Spartan Hour is an extra period that occurs every Tuesday and Thursday after 1st period. Students go to their assigned Spartan Hour classroom and complete classwork. Other activities happen during Spartan Hour, as well, such as club meetings, spirit week events, and more. Students have the same Spartan Hour classroom for all four years of high school.

Lunch

Summary
Lunch happens during Period 5. The period is split into three sections: 5A, 5B, and 5C. 5th hour classes take place in two of the three sections, with lunch occurring in the third section. Classes are randomly assigned which period (5A, 5B, 5C) they have lunch.

Finals Week

Summary
Finals Week always happens on the last week of both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Instead of the standard seven period schedule, each day usually has only 2 or 3 periods, in addition to 5th period and Spartan Hour. This is meant to give teachers more time to conduct finals tests.

Online Learning

Summary
Students can choose to take classes online. OHS only offers a few online classes, like Spanish III and Creative Writing, so many students take online classes from other schools. Students taking online classes during the school year receive a study hall for each semester of the class to complete online classwork during that time. Students can also take online classes during the summer.

Blended Learning

Summary
Orono offers many blended classes. Blended classes are classes in which students spend some time in the classroom with their teacher, and some outside of class working independently or with groups.

Detention

Summary
Detention is when students are required to stay after or before school in a teacher's classroom. Students can receive detention if they have too many unexcused absences or are acting up in class. If students do not serve their detention when they are supposed to, they have to serve double the detention and may lose certain privileges, such as being able to go to school dances.
