The rise and fall of the gaming social plataform

What is it?

Social media for gamers made by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy. You can exchange text, images, audio and video. It's great also for gaming communities and developers to communicate news, updates... It's main competitors are Whatsapp and Reddit

Great for spedrunning communities

How did it start?

It started as a chat service for the development of strategies for Final Fantasy XIV and League of Legends. It was first released in May 2015 and it started growing rapidly as many subreddits started moving onto this app. In April 2018 Microsoft teamed up with Discord and connected it's Xbox Live service to Discord. After this many other companies also started teaming up with this app (Twitch, Sony, Valve, Epic Games...).

How is it today?

From June 2020 Discord started focusing on non-gaming. In November 2021 it was fined 800,000€ by the CNIL (Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés) for leaking crucial information of the US goverment. And untill now it is a normal thing to find classified documents on diferents Discord servers.

Not-so-fun facts!

Most of the leaked goverment files until now (35%) have been leaked on a Minecraft server called "Thug shaker central" and all other servers connected to this. The rest of this information was mainly leaked on Warthunder servers. The name "Discord" was chosen because "it sounds cool". Discord is one of the most used apps for communicating with others, this is due to all the things that have appeared in this presentation.
