Internal & External Conflict

Use this page as a review to remind you of the definitions.

In any story there are often many different conflicts occurring. There are two main types of conflicts that a character can encounter. These are called internal conflicts and external conflicts. Internal Conflict: An Internal Conflict is when a character struggles mentally with a decision or choice. The character has to weigh many different factors like guilt, good versus bad, and other social expectations. This type of conflict is inside the character's mind. Examples of Internal Conflict: Should I stand up to my bully? Should I ask that cute girl out? External Conflict: An External Conflict is when the character encounters a struggle or problem from an outside force. This type of conflict is outside the character's mind and is based on outside forces that they cannot control. Examples of External Conflict: Trying to fight a dragon or surviving in a snow blizzard.
