ALL SUMMER IN A DAY

Pablo Moreno

All Summer in a Day is a touching short story written by Ray Bradbury set on Venus, where the sun appears for just one hour every seven years. The story revolves around a group of children anxiously waiting for this rare event. The main character, Margot, is an outcast who vividly remembers the sun from her time on Earth, which is the only thing that brings her joy. The other children, jealous of her past experience, cruelly lock her in a closet during the precious and brief moments of sunshine. The author perfectly portrays the consequences of selfishness and the briefness of joy.

Dear Mr. Bradbury, I am a student writing in order to express my feelings about your short story “All Summer in a Day”, which is really beautifully written but has some flaws. Firstly, I would like to congratulate you for your amazing work as a writer, every single one of your stories perfectly portrays a specific feeling, especially “All Summer in a Day”, which I really enjoyed. The setting of the story is what really caught my eye and made me give it a chance. However, there are some things that don’t sit right with me such as the fact that every character is extremely bland and lacks personality. In addition, I feel like the ending lacks spiciness but I guess the ending had to be just as every other character. Thank you for your attention and time. I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience and I appreciate any advice or suggestions you can offer on this matter. Yours sincerely,

“All Summer in a Day” is a sci-fi short story written by well-known author Ray Bradbury. The story is set in a future on the planet Venus, where the sun only shines for one hour every seven years. The story opens on the day that the sun is supposed to make its appearance, with all the children anxiously waiting for it. We are introduced to the main character, Margot, a delicate girl that feels excluded from her classmates due to the fact that she remembers the sun from her previous time on Earth more clearly than them. “All Summer in a Day” is one of the most unique stories that I’ve read. The author's words have this incredible power to transport you into the heart of the narrative, witnessing the events unfold in real time. I highly recommend this thought-provoking short story. If you enjoy a story that’s so captivating that you can’t put it down, you’ll love “All Summer in a Day”.

Self-evaluation

I feel accomplished after completing my project on "All Summer in a Day." While I faced challenges in expressing complex ideas due to the deepness behind the story, I overcame them by seeking feedback and refining my writing. I enjoyed digging into the story's themes and character development the most, but struggled with tricky vocabulary. Through this project, I've learned to appreciate the importance of reading. I would recommend future students undertake this project, as it offers a valuable opportunity to enhance language skills and engage with a deep literary work.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Margot

Margot is a fragile and introverted girl who stands out among her classmates on Venus due to her vivid memories of the sun on Earth. Her dull behavior and expressions reveal her deep sense of isolation. Margot's diversity comes from her ability to remember and appreciate a reality that others can't understand. Personally, I don’t like the character nor what she represents. I think she’s a bland and depressive character that just doesn't belong there, she lets her classmates step over her thinking she’s special and that they don’t understand her when in reality she’s just a little edgy and can’t live in community.

William

William is one of Margot's classmates, embodying the collective mindset of the children on Venus. He plays a role in setting Margot aside due to her past life, reflecting the group's inability to empathize with her. He shows how people can follow what everyone else is doing without really thinking about it. William represents how being part of a group can make people mistreat others just because they are different. William is another character that I don’t like. His personality is based on being the bad boy and being contrary to everything Margot says or does. He’s a really basic character, the prototype of a bully with a very limited backstory, which leaves us with the need of knowing why he despises Margot so much, because it can’t be just because she remembers the sun better than him.

Teacher

The teacher in the story is responsible for the children's education but appears indifferent to Margot's struggles. Despite knowing about Margot's past experiences, the teacher fails to intervene, reflecting a passive complicity in the mistreatment of the girl. The teacher is another character that I don’t like. However, I like how she symbolizes the questionable authority figures' role in keeping order in society. I guess the author did a great job creating this character because it made me not like her even though she just has a couple of lines, which is perfect due to the fact that her small interventions represent the very little authority figures do.
