REVIEW

At the time of the Inquisition in Spain, an anonymous narrator narrates his death sentence. Wake up in a dark prison, discover a deep pit, and face a deadly pendulum. Cunningly, he lures rats with food to free himself just in time. Later, tied to a table, he watches as the pendulum, now in the shape of a scythe, slowly descends towards his heart. Ingeniously smearing food on his leash, he attracts rats who cut his tether just before they reach him. The walls close in on the well, but the French general Lasalle and his army intervene, ending the Inquisition and rescuing the narrator. This ingenious escape culminates in an unexpected twist, revealing that the French general led the operation to take down the oppressive institution.

FORMAL LETTER

Dear mr.Edgar allan poe The story that you have written seems very interesting to me since it shows a very important moment with the spaint history.I think you see in the history. I think you have been able to briefly explain what the inquisition was and that darkness behind it is a history with a lot of content in little space. those moments when you are showing us the torture and suffering in the inquisition. those moments in which it makes us readers feel as if we were in that same place that suffering that the author experiences in that well In conclusion , I recommended this story because in the old moment you saw that you want to continue reading to know what happens and it shows great continuity. Congratulations on this story.

QUOTES: 1-”I remember other stories of the prisons at Toledo, stories of other kinds of death” We know that the main and only character has been sentenced to death by the Spanish Inquisition. He already knows what this means because he knows previous stories. 2-”I am afraid to open my eyes. Not afraid of seeing something terrible, but afraid that there is nothing to see.” The main character is all the time describing the situation. This is the first time he opens up and expresses his feelings. As we have seen in the previous quote, he knows about the tortures he may suffer. 3-”Theblackness of the blackest night is around me. Am I already dead? No! A terrible thought comes to me. I am in a tomb - they have buried me alive in a tomb! This is a strong way of describing the terrible situation he is involved in. It shows a perfect command of language by Poe.”

We know he is afraid, but he is trying to use his intelligence to know more about the place he is in and what he may expect. 4-”I walk on, slowly, until my fingers touch a wall. It is wet and cold. I begin to follow it round, but then stop. How big is my prison? I must know. I tear off a small piece of my long prison shirt and put it on the floor, next to the wall. I move on again, counting my steps. This is a curious reaction by the main character. We know he is afraid, but he is trying to use his intelligence to know more about the place he is in and what he may expect.” 5-”Dear God, I am going to die in this prison - a slow and terrible death. Every second of every hour of every day I will wait for it, and the waiting will be as terrible as the death itself.” We don't know what he has done for being condemned by a religious judge. But this quote shows that he believes in God because he is speaking to him. Again it also shows Poe's great command of language. 6-"In death - no! even in the grave all is not lost”. Although he is in a difficult situation, this quote shows he is quite optimistic and this saves his life because he fights to get out of every challenge he finds.
