THE EARTH'S RESOURCES

MINERALS

MINERALS

MINERALS are the basic components of rocks, sand and soil on Earth. They form naturally. There are two types:

A single substance (Such as diamond)

A compound Two or more substances (emeralds for example are composed of beryllium, aluminum and silicon)

HARDNESS: THE MOHS SCALE

Hardness is the resistance of materials to be scratched by another material. In the 19th century, Friedrich Mohs, an Austrian chemist developed this scale in order to help with this classification.

ROCKS

ROCKS

TYPES OF ROCKS:

METAMORPHIC ROCK Movements below the surface carry rock back under the surface. There, it experiences high heat and pressure. It changes its composition and structure. We have examples:

SEDIMENTARY ROCK They are formed on the Earth's surface (land or under water)

IGNEOUS ROCK They come from the mantle, where rock is liquid because of the high temperature. When magma cools, it becomes solid

SLATE METAMORPHIC ROCK

SEDIMENTARY ROCK

Small particles of rock (sediments) are deposited in layers at different times (including dead plants and animals). Over time, the layers at the bottom are compressed and form sedimentary rocks. They often have fossils in them. We have examples like clay, limestone, coal...

IGNEOUS ROCK

1. If magma cools slowly below the Earth's surface, it creates intrusive igneous rock. An example is gratinte, with large crystals that we can see as patterns. 2. When magma erupts through a volcano, it forms lava, which forms extrusive igneous rock. If the lava contains a lot of gas or liquid, the rocks will have a lot of small holes. An example is pumice. 3. If it is not mixed with gas or liquid, it will form obsidian. It is black and very smooth.
