In 1993 the EEC changed its name to the EU, which today has 27 countries. With the Maastricht Treaty, the EU states committed themselves to achieving economic and monetary union by adopting a single currency, namely the euro. Until January 31st this year there were 28 member countries, but Great Britain left.
The process of unification of Europe began after the Second World War. The ECSC, the European coal and steel community, was born following the Treaty of Paris and was the first form of cooperation between European states, created in 1951, it aimed at the political and economic development of the founding countries, namely France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Western Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.
