WHO WAS NELSON MANDELA?
What did Nelson Mandela do?
Nelson Mandela became a leader in the African National Congress. At the first he pushed hard from the congress and the protesters to follow Mohandas Ghandi's non-violent approach.
He planned to bomb certain buildings,but only the buildings.He wanted to make sure that no one would be hurt. He was classified as a terrorist.
Manderla spend 27 years in prison.Once released from prison,he continued his campaign to end apartheid.Nelson Mandela won the election in 1994 and became the president of South Africa.

He was arrested along whit 150 other people on 5 dicember 1956 on charges of treason.An aggressive trial followed, lasting from 1956 to 1961,at the end of which all the defendants were aquitted.
In 1962 he was arrested a second time for organizing protestes and for living the country without the autorization of the authorities.
During his imprisonment,the police arrest important ANC leaders and Mandela was accused also in this trial.
Mandela remained in prison until Febraury 1990. Growing protests from the ANC and the pressure from the international comunity led to his release on 11 febraury 1990.

On 28 march 2013 he was admitted to a hispotal in Pretoria for a serious infection. He was discharged after a few days, on 6 april 2013.Two month later,on 8 june 2013,he was hospitalized again in worried conditions. Nelson Mandela died on 5 dicember 2013 at his nome in Johannesburg at the age of 95. The president of South Africa,Jacob Zuma,was the first to make the announcement
live on television.Mandela was buried in the family tomb in the town of Qunu.

Nelson Mandela was born on july 18,1918 in Mvezo.His birth name is Rolihlahla.He got the nickname Nelson from a teacher in school.He attended school and later college at the College of Fort Hare and the university of Witwatersrand. At Witwatersrand he got his law degree and would meet some of his fellow activists against apartheid
Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa.He fought against apartheid. He served a good portion of his life in prison for his protests but he became a symbol for his people.
