GUIDE FOR
CASE STUDY ANALYSES
STEP 1
STEP 4
STEP 2
STEP 5
STEP 3
STEP 6
Due Thursday of the session's third week: As a group, provide the following in this session’s Discussion section.
- Summary of:
- Who is making the claim.
- The grounds for the claim.
- Any identified underlying assumptions regarding the claim that are not explicitly stated in the case study.
- Your systems map (this need not be “neat;” complex systems are rather messy!).
Due at the end of the session: Review and comment on other groups’ Discussion posts.
- Review a group who has chosen the same case study (if no other group has chosen your same case study, go to step 2 below).
- What are the similarities and differences between your groups’ summaries?
- Are there any notable differences in your systems maps?
- Review a group who has chosen a different case study.
- As you read their summary and review their systems map, are there any other underlying assumptions or outstanding questions that come to mind?
Use systems thinking questions to analyze the case study:
- What are the researchers choosing to see or not see?
- How are these things organized into part/whole groupings?
- How are these things related?
- Do the relationships themselves have identifiable parts?
- From what or whose perspective?
Read the case study and determine with your group who is making the claim.
Based on your systems analysis of the case study, determine who is making the claim.
Based on your systems analysis of the claim, determine the grounds for the claim.
Are there any underlying assumptions regarding the claim that are not explicitly stated in the article? If so, what are they?
