Preparatory lessons for the oral section of the Cambridge B2 First exam

To introduce students to the format of different sections of the exam and equip them with the vocabulary and conceptual skills they need to succeed

Students in the Bilingual Program in 4th of ESO who plan to take the B2 first exam at the end of the year.

Lesson Logistics

Length

Collaboration

Each lesson is made for a 55 minute class period and is meant to introduce and practice a different section of the exam.

The LA will lead the lesson while the main teacher assists with classroom management and additional error correction as necessary.

Classroom Setup

For these lessons, students should be set up in pairs.

Section 1: Interview

Warm-up

Time: 15-20 minutes

Materials:

• List of questions
• Ball (or something that can be tossed)

Activity:

• LA projects list of 20 or 25 questions typical of Cambridge Speaking Test section 1
• LA tosses the ball to a student and asks a question from the list; the student has 30 seconds to give an answer
• The student then tosses the ball to another student and asks them a question from the list; repeat until all students have spoken
• LA gives basic error correction after each student speaks

Critiquing a Real-life Cambridge Speaking Test

Time: 25 minutes

Materials:

• Blank rubric for each student
• Cambridge Speaking Test example video

Activity:

• LA plays attached video
• In rubric, students write down what Camilla does and does not do well
• LA leads discussion of students' answers and shows them the Camilla's actual exam rubric
• Students discuss in pairs what they learned and how they might have changed their warm-up answer given what they know now about the exam

Why is this lesson helpful for my students?

• The warm-up activity introduces students to the challenge of answering questions with no preparation and under time pressure

• Seeing and filling out a rubric puts students in the examiners' shoes and understand what is expected on the exam

• Using their new knowledge, students are encouraged to reflect critically on their own performance

Adaptability

All Cambridge tests from A2 to C1 contain a similar interview portion. Teachers preparing students for these levels can replicate this lesson by:

• Tweaking the difficulty of the warm-up questions
• Replacing the video with one appropriate for the given level

Section 2: Picture comparison

Warm-up

Time: 10 minutes

Materials:

• Worksheet with Venn diagram and three blank columns
• Two related but different pictures

Activity:

• LA projects two pictures on the board
• Students must fill out the Venn Diagram describing what is the same and different about the pictures

Compare and Contrast Vocabulary

Time: 10 minutes

Material:

• Same worksheet

Activity

• LA directs students to come up with vocabulary they can use to describe differences (contrast) and similarity (comparison)
• Students discuss as a class and add ideas to their sheets

Inference Vocabulary

Time: 15 minutes

Material:

• Same worksheet

Activity

• LA directs students to make inferences based on the pictures (what might be happening, what they can guess)
• Students must come up with vocabulary they can use to introduce inferences and then discuss and share them as a class

Mock Section 2 Practice

Time: 15 minutes

Material:

• Set of related pictures

Activity:

• LA displays a set of pictures on the board
• One student in each pair has a minute to discuss the picture using comparison, contrast, and hypothesizing.
• Students discuss as a class and then repeat with the other student in the pair discussing a new set of pictures

Why is this lesson helpful for my students?

• The Venn Diagram helps scaffold the activity and encourage students to think systematically about types of similarities and differences to look for

• Having students come up with and share their own vocabulary rather than simply providing a list encourages creative thinking and knowledge retention

• Students then put together what they have learned to simulate the exam section under time pressure, and can also critique and reflect upon their partners' performance.

Adaptability

The B1 and C1 Cambridge exams contain modified versions of the photo task. For the B1 level, students are only given one photograph. Teachers might have students focus on only one of the given photographs, and modify the vocabulary chart two have two columns, one for phrases used to describe the picture and one with words to hypothesize about the picture. For the C1 version, students are given three photographs to compare and contrast. Teachers might add a third related photograph to those already provided here.

Spontaneous speaking can be challenging for students, so these lessons include listening and writing as a form of brainstorming to appeal to different learning styles.

Students practice with, critique and learn from their partners, and brainstorm vocabulary and ideas with the class, allowing weaker students to learn from stronger students

Through vocabulary building, watching example videos, and brainstorming, students have opportunity to prepare before practicing the exam section.
