INTRODUCTION
SHRAVANABELAGULA
- Shravanabelagola is home to the 18 m high statue of Lord Gometeshwara; considered to be one of the world's tallest free-standing monolithic statues. Constructed in 981 AD by Chamundaraya, a Ganga warrior, it is carved out of a single block of granite and looms on the top of Vindhyagiri Hill.
HISTORY
According to the Jain texts, Bahubali or Gomateshwara was the second son of first Tirthankara of Jains, Rishabdeva or Adinath. It is said that Adinath had in total 100 sons. When Rishabdev left his kingdom, a tussle took place between two of his sons – Bharatha and Bahubali for the empire.
Information 01
The focal point of Shravanabelagola is the Bahubali statue, an embodiment of non-violence and spiritual pursuit. The intricate carvings on the monolith reflect the artistry of the Ganga dynasty, showcasing a blend of religious and cultural influences. Pilgrims flock to witness the grand spectacle and engage in rituals that have been carried out for centuries. The town's name itself holds historical significance, derived from the story of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who embraced Jainism and spent his last years in meditation at Shravanabelagola. The Chandragiri and Vindhyagiri hills, with their numerous ancient temples and inscriptions, serve as testimony to the enduring legacy of Jainism in the region.
Information 02
Shravanabelagola is not merely a historical relic; it is a living testament to the vibrant Jain community. The annual Mahamastakabhisheka festival, held once every 12 years, is a grand ceremony where the Bahubali statue is anointed with various substances. This event attracts millions of devotees and tourists, creating a cultural extravaganza that transcends regional boundaries. Beyond its religious significance, Shravanabelagola offers a serene escape with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the Vindhyagiri Hill, though steep, is a spiritual journey for many, fostering introspection and a sense of awe as one reaches the summit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Shravanabelagola is a treasure trove of Jain heritage, an architectural marvel, and a testament to the enduring spiritual legacy of the region. Its significance goes beyond the physical landscape, extending into the hearts of those who seek solace and enlightenment amidst its ancient hills and timeless monuments.

Crafts corner : Pot ornamenting
There are countless options to decorate a flower pot. You could use patterned napkins to decoupage, fabric for a collage, or use oil-based paints. Try using stencils and decorating with flowers. For a terracotta pot, you can do a single, bold stripe of color on the bottom or use a marbling technique.
