Conventional schools are a model of formal organisation of learning. Upon completion of compulsory years of attendance and the passing of certain assessments, students receive a qualification to confirm their level of education
Self-directed learning is a natural approach to education. It can happen anywhere without a need for assessments nor validation from external agencies. The learner makes the choice of the learning experience that best serves his needs

Self-directed learning
Self-directed education is "education that derives from the self-chosen activities and life experiences of the person being educated, whether or not those activities were chosen deliberately for the purpose of education.” Alliance for Self-Directed Education
- Children learn at their own pace and decide what and when to learn
- Children learn within a mixed age learning environment
- Adult support the learning process
Children are interested in endurance, problem-solving, in finding fulfilment, and in gaining confidence and competence in the process.
Problem solver
Children are born with the ability to learn. When children are given the opportunity to decide what to learn and comprehend the options laid out in front of them, they assume that responsibility
a natural drive
When kids are motivated and curious about something, they are driven and determined.
Intrinsic motivation

Tools of the culture
Children need to play, learn and master the tools of their culture Children are naturally drawn to tools used by adults. Children see these tools as mediums to be creative, to achieve self-knowledge and fullfill their goals.
- Learning is organised into blocks of knowledge
- Based on the transfer of a curriculum
- learners are expected to reach a set of skills and knowledge within a time frame
- Motivation is fostered through a system of rewards and grades
- A single grade classrooms
- Assessments are used to evaluate performance and validate education level.
Main Stream Schooling
Adult helpers not judges
Children's world is not separate from that of adults. Children need interaction with a variety of supporting adults to understand the world around them. They don't need to be judged, assessed to have meaningfull and deep learning experiences. They need trusting and respectful adults that give them access to powerful learning tools and resources that allow them to experiment.
Zone of proximal development
Children thrive in mixed age environment. They love engaging in collaborative interactions and ventures with people who are either of the same abilities or more skilled than them. This is an empowering experience; it allows them to apply their knowledge and develop news skills by learning from others; who are either adults or older children.

Holt's views on learning
- The person who really needs to know something does not need to be told many times, drilled, tested. Once is enough
- How much people can learn at any moment depends on how they feel at that moment about the task and their ability to do the task
- Children learn from anything and everything they see. They learn wherever they are, not just in special learning places.
- “A life worth living, and work worth doing - that is what I want for children (and all people), not just, or not even, something called 'a better education.
