1.4% of the population have been diagnosed with BPD- over 5 million people in the U.S.
Etiology
What is it?
Research supports the idea that BPD can be the result, biologically, of a serotonin deficiency, deficient functioning frontal lobes, and an overly reactive amygdala. Psychologically, negative early childhood experiences, maladaptive thought patterns, and lack of social skills can also be an explanation. Socially, BPD can be a result of highly dysfunctional families with psychological and social issues and maltreatment.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder wherein individuals shows patterns of instability in relationships with others and themselves.
