Samara

Samara (from January 27, 1935 to January 25, 1991 — Kuibyshev) is a city in the Middle Volga region of Russia, the center of the Volga Economic Region and the Samara Region, forms the Samara city district. The city of labor and military glory (2016). The City of Labor Valor (2020).The population is 1,163,645 people (2023), the ninth most populous city in Russia. More than 2.7 million people live within the agglomeration (the third largest in Russia).

HISTORY

The city was founded in 1586 as a fortress at the confluence of the Samara Dam into the Volga, a wide branch of the Samara River. At first it was mentioned in letters as Samara town, Samara city, since the beginning of the XVII century the name Samara city has been in use. In 1935, it was renamed Kuibyshev in memory of the Soviet party and statesman V. V. Kuibyshev, in 1991 the name Samara was returned to the city.
