Une rime désigne l’identité des sons, appelée homophonie, des syllabes finales entre deux ou plusieurs mots situés en fin de vers. Il s’agit souvent d’une répétition de sons identiques, souvent la dernière voyelle du vers et les phonèmes suivants.

Distinguer rime pauvre, suffisante, riche.

Comme nous l'avons déjà vu en classe, les rimes contiennent un plus ou moins grand nombre de sons en commun. On parle de leur richesse.

- Si deux mots ont un seul son en commun, on dit que la rime est pauvre : Se trouva fort dépourvue Quand la Bise fut venue. - Si deux mots ont deux sons en commun, on dit que la rime est suffisante :La Cigale, ayant chanté Tout l’Été, - Si deux mots ont trois sons ou plus en commun, on dit que la rime est riche :La Fourmi n’est pas prêteuse : C’est là son moindre défaut. D’ordinaire, les textes poétiques se caractérisent par une structure particulière : la mise en page est très aérée car ils sont organisés en vers (« lignes ») et strophes(« paragraphes »).On nomme les strophes selon le nombre de vers dont elles se composent. Un distique compte 2 vers, tandis qu'un tercet est constitué de 3 vers. Le quatrain, de son côté, est formé de 4 vers. Une strophe de 5 vers se nomme un quintil tandis qu'une strophe de 6 vers est un sizain. Enfin, le septain compte 7 vers, le huitain 8 vers, et le dizain en a 10 en tout.

Le vers traditionnel se définit par le nombre de syllabes qui le composent :

Comment compter les syllabes ? On ne compte pas les syllabes d’un vers comme on compte les syllabes d’une phrase normale, c’est-à-dire en prose. La règle d'or à ne pas oublier est la suivante : on ne compte pas le "e" muet, c'est-à-dire le "e" qui est placé avant une voyelle ainsi que celui qui est situé à la toute fin du vers.
