Curiosidades

Está localizado perto da costa sul entre o Monte. Hekla e Mt. Katla, na Islândia.

O vulcão chama à atenção por diversos fatores, mas principalmente pelo seu nome ser difícil de pronunciar, ser glaciar no topo e pelas suas erupções. Também é importante referir que o limite sul da montanha que o constitui fez parte da costa atlântica, que com a ajuda da regressão marinha, formaram-se penhascos inclinados que hoje formam um conjunto impressionate de quedas de água.

Dados históricos

Entre 1821 e 1823, este vulcão entrou em erupção, assim como já teria entrado antes do século XIX (não existem dados específicos sobre). A mais recente foi em março de 2010, com uma série de eventos sísmicos após a atividade vulcânica.

Limite e Magma

Este vulcão está associado a uma zona divergente na Dorsal Mesoatlântica e produz magma basáltico a andesítico, o que contribui para seu comportamento eruptivo específico. O seu cone tem 1651 de altura, e é conhecido por ser um estratovulcão, ou seja contém camadas de lava endurecida. O topo coberto por gelo é o que torna as erupções tão explosivas.
