LONG VOWEL SOUNDS

/ɜː/

• To produce the sound put your tongue low and in the center of your mouth and stretch out your lips, then make a long voiced sound with your mouth relaxed.
• Is normally spelled with the letters ‘e-r’, but it can also be spelled with the letters ‘o-r’, or ‘u-r’, or ‘i-r’.

/iː/

• This is a long sound that we make with the mouth spread, just like if we were smiling.
• We usually spell it “ee” or “ea”.

• Is written as the letter 'o,',or as the combination of letters 'au' ," as a single letter 'a'.
• To produce the sound put your tongue low and at the back of your mouth and lightly push your lips together while making a long voiced sound.

• Make the /uː/ sound by lifting the back of your tongue more than for /ʊ/ and using your voice. your lips should be very rounded and the hole between your lips should be small.

WHAT IS AN ENGLISH DIPHTHONG?

The word diphthong comes from the Greek word meaning “two sounds.” Based on that definition, we know that a diphthong is a sound that combines two vowel sounds.

/aɪ/ written as igh, but can also be represented by a single i or y in English words Examples:

/oʊ/ The diphthong /oʊ/ is quite a versatile diphthong. It’s commonly written in a variety of ways, such as ow, oa or a single o that’s followed by a consonant and an e. Examples:

• know
• boat

/ɪə/ Firstly, it can occur before the letter r, but it can also come before the letter l. It’s commonly written as ee, ea or a single e that comes before an r or l. Examples:

• peel
• dear

/ɔɪ/

After our previous diphthong, you’ll be happy to know that this one is easier to identify based on the spelling. Quite simply, it’s commonly written as oy or oi, such as in the words. Examples:
