Was born in Edinburgh into a professional middle-class family.As a child he became familiar with many legends and stories of past. He wrote traditional Scottish ballads. He supported the union of Scottland with England. He regretted Scotland's loss of indipendence.

He's novels are told by a third-person or omniscent narrator.He makes use of: -historical documents; -detailed descriptions; -flashbacks. He is considered the "father" of the historical novel, he wants to describe the way of all classes. He combined the realism, Romanticism, wide variety of plot and lively dialogue. He was, as Byron, the only British Romantic to win truly European fame.

The Cavalry William madly loves the young Lady Rowena. However the father tries to hinder the relationship between the two young men since the father had promised his daughter in marriage to athelstane. Ivanhoe leaves for the Crusades and the brother of the King Richard the Lion’s Heart takes over the throne. Ivanhoe then participates in a tournament under the command of King Richard where he wins against all the vassals of John II, but is imprisoned by the Normans with Cedric, Rowena and Atlhestane. Then King Richard with the support of Robin Hood frees the prisoners and Ivanhoe marries Lady Rowena. Characters: -Cedric the Rotherwood; -Lady Rowena; -Ivanhoe. Is Scott's best-known novel.
