SUMMARY
This book starts when Colonel Bryan Kelly's plane crashes and all the people that were there are arrested by Pi Ying. To be liberated, Pi Ying proposes a real life game of chess, where every time that he captures a piece, the person who represents that piece is executed. Suddenly, a woman who was watching the play kills Pi Ying and Brazov continues playing against Kelly, who cheats to save his son’s life. Finally, Kelly wins the chess game and all the Americans are moved to a secure place.
CHARACTERS
Pi Ying
Colonel Bryan Kelly
He is a Communist Guerrilla chief, who wants to kill all Americans, because his country was against America in fear. So he is the character who proposed the game because his objective was to reduce his enemies. But finally he was killed by an Oriental woman
He is also known as Kelly and is one of the main characters of that book. All the story turns into him and there appears all his family. He was the most affected person by the game that Pi Ying had proposed but finally, he obtained what he wanted, that was to avoid Pi Ying killing his prisoners and his family.
Major Barzov
Also known as Barzov was a taciturn Russian Military. At the beginning, his mission was to observe the chess game and defend all the movements of Pi Ying. But finally, caused by the death of Pi Ying, he decided to play against Kelly. But he didn’t want to kill people, so he finally gave up and ended the game.
QUOTES
“However, as long as there is no official state of war, I have no choice, as a representative of my government, but to see that all of you are conducted safely through the lines. This was my plan when I resumed the game where Pi Ying left off. Your being freed has nothing to do with my personal feelings, nor with the outcome of the game. My winning would have delighted me and taught you a valuable lesson. But it would have made no difference in your fates.”
“You’ve just lost your son”
“No, I won't take the boy. I feel as Pi Ying felt about you that you, as Americans, are the enemy, whether an official state of war exists or not. I look upon you as prisoners of war.”
“Perhaps you’d like to play another game, Colonel plain chess with wooden chessmen, without Pi Ying’s refinement. I don’t like to have you leave here thinking you play a better game than I.”
“The sixteen of us, soldier, are the chessmen I’ll be playing with”
QUOTES
“In a little while, Pi Ying and I are going to play chess for your lives.”
"However, you’ve won only the initiative, not the game; and now you have me to reckon with instead of Pi Ying. Stay where you are, Colonel. I’ll be back shortly.”
“In “Since so much blood has been shed in this game, it would be a pitiful waste to leave it unresolved.”
“Jerry? Oh, of course, the little boy. Well, what about Jerry, Colonel?” asked Barzov. “I’ll make a special concession, if you like. Would you want to take the move back?”
"The price of your victory, of course, has yet to be paid,” said Barzov acidly. “I presume you’re ready to pay now?"

Dear Mr. Vonnegut: I have read your book called “All the King’s horses” and I am writing to you to ask some questions that I have considered when I was reading it. Although, I also want to express my deep admiration for you. My main reason for applying is that I want to ask you how you invented the main idea of the book. I believe that this book is one of the most original ones that I have ever read so to create something like this, I guess you had to think a lot. Additionally, I would particularly like to know if there will be a second part of the book. Your work makes me enjoy it a lot. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I am looking forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Laura Salas.
A FORMAL LETTER
A REVIEW
All the King's Horses is a Welcome to the Monkey House book that was written by Kurt Vonnegut. The book reflects the resolution of a war between 2 opposing countries. Finally, that war is resolved in a real game of chess. Kelly's plane crashes and all the people that were there are arrested by Pi Ying. He decided to fix the political problems by playing with them a real chess game. The game was advanced and Pi Ying was killing people when Barzow acted and he changed the course of action. In spite of the problems in the plot, this book contains good lessons that the author wants to transmit to readers. I highly recommend this book. Furthermore, I believe that after reading it, your opinion on politics will change and you will always find the best solution for your problems.
After completing this project, I believe that it has helped me to practice the different types of writing. In addition, it has also helped me learn new words that I didn't know before and I think I have improved my reading comprehension skills. The thing that I liked the most was being able to freely choose the book that I wanted to read. But, on the other hand, doing so many different activities has been a little more difficult. In spite of that, I would recommend this project to future students because it is a good and useful way to learn and read books.
