Module overview and assessment
The first unit looks at social innovation through the lens of organisation theory and asks four key questions: why do social enterprises exist, how do social innovators make decisions, why do social innovations start to look the same over time, and how do social innovators effect social change?
In this unit, we will explore the different approaches we can take to change, how an organisation's structural, political, and cultural characteristics shape opportunities for and barriers to change, and the specific mechanisms and actions found to underpin effective change, both within organisations and in larger social systems.
The third unit of this module focuses on the role of leadership in organisational effectiveness and sustainability. We examine three core aspects of leadership: (i) leading the self, including the key areas of self-awareness, self-belief, and authenticity; (ii) leading and collaborating with others in the organisational context and (iii) leading across organisations and stakeholders, finishing with a focus on critical approaches to leadership.
Technologies are at the root of research about and work for social change and innovation. In this unit, we will try to understand how technologies function at the heart of social problems, while also getting to know how technologies enable powerful processes of social change. The unit focuses on ideas around the innovation and development of new technologies, as well as theories that explain social struggles around the use of new technologies. I have invited several practitioners to join, both in your online content and when we meet in person. We will focus on a few digital phenomena, including data, social media, artificial intelligence and algorithms.
In the module overview section, you will find the learning outcomes for Module 2 and information about the module structure, key dates and assessment, including the submission link for your assignment.
