If a candidate generalizes and doesn’t provide specific details, you should respond with “That’s great. Tell me a specific time that you employed that behavior.”

If a candidate is struggling to answer a question, instead of moving onto another question, try to rephrase it.

Often the best answer comes through after taking a moment for reflection.

Listen to how they handled the situation, but also what the candidate defines as a difficult situation. This provides insight into their character.

Key in on a specific pieces of missing information where you want to dig a little deeper. To probe, you can simply say, “Tell me more about that.”
