In the year 929 A.D., the emir of al-Andalus, Abderraman III, proclaimed himself caliph, uniting political power with religious authority. He sacked cities such as Barcelona, Pamplona, etc...
Internal struggles led to the disintegration of the Caliphate of Córdoba in 1031, which was divided into small independent kingdoms called taifas.
