In the year 929 A.D., the emir of al-Andalus, Abderraman III, proclaimed himself caliph, uniting political power with religious authority. He sacked cities such as Barcelona, Pamplona, etc...

Internal struggles led to the disintegration of the Caliphate of Córdoba in 1031, which was divided into small independent kingdoms called taifas.

The Almoravids and later the Almohads invaded al-Andalus and subdued the Taifa kingdoms.

In 1833, after 341 years of existence, the Royal Decree of 30 November suppressed the kingdom of Granada, creating the current province of Granada, which was formed by joining localities of the homonymous kingdom,
