Il re aveva potere assoluto; governava insieme a sacerdoti e nobili. Gli artigiani erano stimati per le loro capacità; i contadini e pastori dovevano versare parte del loro raccolto o averi come tributi; gli schiavi venivano sfruttati in lavori faticosi. Le donne era tenute in grande considerazione, perciò curavano molto il loro aspetto con abiti sfarzosi e gioielli splendidi. Anche gli uomini si adornavano, avevano i capelli lunghi e la barba rasata.

Secondo gli storici i Cretesi scrivevano un tipo di scrittura detta Lineare A rimasta indecifrata. Conoscevano anche il geroglifico e la Lineare B. I Cretesi credevano in molte divinità ma la principale era la Dea Madre, che proteggeva uomini, Terra e animali. Durante il tempo libero venivano svolte molte competizioni sportive, tra cui la Tauromachia, ossia il salto mortale sopra il toro.

Il palazzo reale era il centro della città e attorno ad esso sorgevano le abitazioni. Uno dei re più importanti è Minosse che da il nome alla civiltà Minoica.

LA FINE DELLA CIVILTA' MINOICA

Solamente sel 1900 un archeologo Arthur Evans trovò sull'isola di Creta i resti della civiltà e del palazzo di Cnosso.

Nel 1570 a.C. i grandi palazzi della civiltà cretese andarono distrutti. Non si sa se sia dovuto al fatto di attacchi esterni (dai Micenei) o da eventi naturali. L'ultima ipotesi è l'eruzione del vulcano di Santorini con un conseguente maremoto in direzione di Creta.
