Remote Sensing

Refers to the use of satellites, aircraft, and other technology to gather information about Earth's surface & atmosphere.

  • computer modeling allows us am ore accurate & detailed prediction of natural hazards than just historical data or remote sensing alone.
  • all models use assumptions, which may not be correct, so computer models could have errors.

Look at the East Coast of the US.

Contour Interval

Index contour lines are labled with the elevation so you can determine the contour interval. The contour interval is how much each contour line counts up by. In the example, we can see that each contour line counts up by 10's.

Directions: *DO NOT ZOOM IN* 1. Take a look at the world map from a zoomed-out view. 2. On the right toolbar, press on legends.

Types of Maps

Topo maps show you a birds-eye view of the land. The closer the lines, the steeper the slope! The closed circle in the center represents the top of a mountain/hill. *If it has hash marks (like the example), it is showing a depression- a lake, volcano, or sinkhole.

There are a few spots on the map that are bright red. Using the key, determine what type of rock the red color represents.

Historical Data

Studying historical data of natural disasters provides insights into the frequency, intensity, and location of past disasters. This allows us to identify patterns and tends.

  • historical records
  • news articles
  • scientific studies
  • eyewitness accounts

Contour Lines

Contour lines connect points of equal elevation. Contour line A would have the lowest elevation because it is on the outside Contour line B would have a higher elevation than A, but lower than C. As you work your way inward, elevation increases.
