How vowel sounds of the English language are pronounced
Diphthongs
Short vowels
Long vowels
The vowel sound is pronounced individually, when the vowel is the protagonist. Typically, this occurs when the vowel is alone or is at the end of a word or syllable. It tends to lengthen the sound emitted by the speaker so that you have an excellent expression of the words.
The concept of short vowels in linguistics refers to the brief duration of these vowel sounds in spoken language. In (IPA), short vowels are denoted by specific symbols that represent their distinct sounds. These sounds are typically brief and clear, contrasting with the longer duration of their corresponding long vowel counterparts.
The diphthong is a set that consists of two vowels. The diphthong is formed when two adjacent vowels are joined in the same syllable. It may happen that you find a syllable with a single vowel that in its phonetic transcription will become a diphthong. That is, the tongue moves during the pronunciation of both vowels to form a Diphthong.
In the International Phonetic Alphabet, long vowels are represented followed by the symbol [ː]. Long vowel sounds are those that are read as the letter is pronounced in the alphabet except in the case of (i). In the English language we have up to 12 different vowel sounds. In addition, they have different lengths: 5 of them are long vowels
while diphthongs are vowel phonemes that begin with one type of vowel sound and slide into another, but continue to form a syllable. In the English language we find up to 8 types of diphthongs which are: /eɪ, aɪ, ɔɪ; oʊ, aʊ; ɪə, ɛə, juː, ʊə/. That is, the tongue moves during the pronunciation of the vowel.
– a short English vowel is noticeably shorter than a long vowel. – an English short vowel is made with only one mouth position. Short vowels in English can never be at the end of a syllable. Short vowel sounds tend to be short and guttural, more different from Spanish. Examples Short a as in ant, cat, bad, sad.
