The concert's repertoire
Musical SPORTS
Artistic swimming
Formerly known as synchronized swimming, artistic swimming is a team sport combining the disciplines of swimming, gymnastics and dance. Music plays an important role, as a team's choreography is based on it. Competitions are held in solo, duo, 8-person or 10-person teams.
Musical SPORTS
Figure SKATING
There are 4 figure skating disciplines: singles, pairs, ice dancing and synchronized skating. Music plays an important role in all 4 disciplines, accompanying the skaters in their choreography. The music is chosen by the skaters in consultation with their coaches. They may hear this music for over 6-12 months during their training and competitions, so it's important that they like it!
Musical SPORTS
Artistic gymnastics
During artistic gymnastics competitions, gymnasts must take part in various events, including a floor routine. For this floor routine, female gymnasts must perform a series of choreographed movements to music in under 90 seconds. The whole routine must be performed in a confined space of 12 square meters. This event showcases the gymnasts' power, technique and artistic talent.
Esprit d'équipe
TEAM SPIRIT
Just as in a sports team, OSM musicians need team spirit to play the symphonic repertoire together. Although musicians don't play offense or defense, they are also part of sub-groups. An orchestra is made up of 4 families of instruments, each with its own position and role on stage.
Strings
Percussions
Woodwinds
Brass
Esprit d'équipe
SolOist
You may know that some sports are considered as individual sports, such as tennis, swimming and judo. Musicians can also decide to play solo and perform as soloists in concerts and even take part in competitions.Every year, the OSM organizes its own competition for young Canadian artists. Created in 1940, the OSM Competition is open to all orchestral families and to singers, on a rotating basis.
The sounds of sports
Although it takes a back seat at sporting events, music is part of the game in many different ways. Whether it's national anthems, crowd chants, or music played in the stadium, music is more present than you might think.

Training is important
A matter of agility
Time for a deep breath
To your batons!
TRAINING IS IMPORTANT
A matter of agility
What it means to be agile?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, agility means:
"the ability to move about quickly and easily.Examples: *A top-rated football player, he combines speed and agility.*Her voice has the lightness and agility that Handel’s music demands."
Not surprisingly, this definition includes musicians and athletes! Watch soloist Hilary Hahn demonstrate her agility on the violin in this video:
Time for a deep breath
What do swimming and the wind section of the orchestra have in common?
Many things, but one of them is being able to manage your breath! In fact, all sports and musical instruments require you to manage the air you breathe in and out. Whether it's literally to produce a sound (as with the flute) or to manage stress, taking the time to breathe is important!
To your batons
When you are a conductor, you are constantly on the move! Listen to this video to better understand the role of this person and the type of movements a conductor makes once on stage! Do you think you would like to be a conductor?

The Bartered Bride
"Dance of the comedians" is an excerpt from a 3-act comic opera entitled The Bartered Bride. In this opera, Mařenka wants to marry her lover Jenik. However, Mařenka's father has already promised her to Micha's son. Will Mařenka be able to marry the man she loves?
BIOGRAPHy
Grażyna Bacewicz
Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) was a Polish composer, teacher and violinist. She studied compositon in Paris in the 1930s and was the principal violinist in an orchestra for 2 years. Much of her work is devoted to this instrument.
The 2023 edition of the competition crowned cellist Leland Ko as the winner. You can see the final round here, where the three finalists played a concerto with the orchestra:
Citius, Altius, Fortius! (Faster, Higher, Stronger!) is a short and energetic orchestral movement, a type of fanfare or overture, inspired by the Olympic motto. The work is characterized by rapid, bustling textures (citius), ascending melodic gestures (altius), and powerful, brass chords (fortius).
Citius, altius, fortius! was premiered in 2008 by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the upcoming Winter Olympic Games of 2010, in Vancouver.

In this video, you can watch John Williams himself conduct the piece he composed!
National Anthems
Very often, during sporting competitions, the national anthems of the countries taking part in the competition are sung before the game and/or once the winners have been decided. Did you know?Ô Canada was composed by Calixa Lavallée in 1880 to lyrics by Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The first performance of the work took place on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day of the same year at the Pavillon des patineurs in Quebec City, during a reception.

BIOGRAPHy
Maxime Goulet
Deeply fascinated and inspired by the connections between different forms of artistic expression, the Montreal based composer Maxime Goulet (born in 1980) works within various realms of musical creation ranging from opera to video games… and all the way to setting chocolate flavours to music!
Olympic fanfare and theme
The work was commissioned for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. John Williams wanted the piece to be a musical representation of "the spirit of cooperation, of heroic achievement, all the striving and preparation that go before the events and all the applause that comes after them."Note that a fanfare is generally a short, dynamic piece of music featuring the brass family, announcing someone or something important.
Invited by the Alouettes, the OSM presented a concert at Percival-Molson Stadium on June 17, 2006 to raise funds for the Fondation Réussite Jeunesse and Garde-Manger Pour Tous.
BIOGRAPHy
Jared Miller
Born in 1988, Jared Miller is a Canadian/American composer and pianist. He was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Vancouver. Nominated for several awards, including a JUNO Award, he is described as a rising star in composition.

Bedřich Smetana
Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) was a Czech composer, conductor and pianist. He is best known for his composition The Moldau, a symphonic poem in honor of the river that flows through the city of Prague.
The sounds of sports
Any kind of sport also involves a number of sounds, whether it's the referee's whistle, skates clacking or the roar of the players.

The percussion
family!
There are many instruments in the percussion family. Some are pitched percussion instruments (capable of playing melodies), while others are unpitched percussion instruments (producing sound effects instead of precise notes). Percussion instruments are placed at the back of the orchestra, as they are generally louder than other instruments. Percussionists also play mostly standing up (as opposed to seated). Listen to Hugues Tremblay talk about the percussion family:
BIOGRAPHy
JOHN WILLIAMS
John Williams is an American composer and conductor born in 1932. He is renowned for his soundtracks to films such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Harry Potter, E.T. and Schindler's List. He has won 5 Oscars to date.
BIOGRAPHy
Joseph Bologne
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St-Georges (1745-1799), was a French composer, conductor, violinist, fencer and soldier. He had an exceptional career for his time.

Did you know...
what's the difference between the 4 disciplines? Ice dancing is performed in duets. In this discipline, skaters don't do jumps (like the triple axel), but they can do lifts. Conversely, singles and pairs skating must include jumps. Synchronized skating is performed in groups of 8 to 16 people.
The weight of instruments
Although many instruments are placed on the floor for playing, they have to be transported from point A to point B for rehearsals and concerts, so musicians have to get used to carrying them. Here are the weights of some of the orchestra's instruments:
- Tuba: from 20 to 30 pounds;
- Double bass: from 20 to 25 pounds, but the case can weigh up to 40 pounds more;
- Harp: from 20 to 40 pounds, depending on the model.
Songs of the
crowd!
During games between sports teams, the crowd can play a very important role in supporting their team with songs of encouragement and celebration, as with the song Ole, ole, ole, olein this video.
*Note that some sports don't allow the crowd to make noise, such as tennis, where the public must remain silent when the ball is in play.
Have you ever seen percussion ensembles before football games or at sports ceremonies? Also known as drumline, these ensembles are in fact similar to ensembles that were used for decades in the army, helping troops to navigate their way through battles.

Did you know?
"Citius, altius, fortius", meaning "Faster, higher, stronger", has long been the motto of the Olympic Games. This motto was changed in 2021 to include the word together, to emphasize the importance of solidarity. The motto is now "Citius, Altius, Fortius - Communiter" or, in English, "Faster, higher, stronger - together".
The
Strings!
The string family is the most numerous in the orchestra. Musicians playing violin, viola, cello and double bass are placed at the front of the orchestra, as this is generally the group of musicians who play the most notes in a concert. These instruments are also less sonorous than brass instruments, so it makes more sense to place them at the front of the orchestra. Listen to Sylvie Lambert talk about the string family:
Overture
This work by Bacewicz was composed in 1943, during the Second World War, while she was living in Warsaw. The 6-minute piece was first performed after the liberation of Poland in 1945, at the Krakow Contemporary Music Festival.
Consistency
One of the most important things for a musician is consistency. It's like running a marathon: you have to train for a long time to get there, and if you stop training, you slowly but surely lose your reflexes and skills. Did you know that OSM musicians can meet up to 9 times a week for rehearsals and/or concerts? That's over 20 hours of playing together!
Did you know?
While female gymnasts perform their floor exercises to music, male gymnasts do so without music! This decision was taken many years ago. The women's discipline must emphasize beauty, elegance and flexibility, while the men's discipline must emphasize power and strength.

What is circular breathing?
Circular breathing (or continuous breathing) is a technique that allows you to exhale and inhale at the same time. Many wind instrumentalists learn this technique, as it enables them to play continuously, without having to stop to catch their breath.
Here's a musician using this technique on the Didgeridoo.
Listen to this video to learn more about the 6th period of the LDT Foundation founded in 2017 by Laurent and his partner Florence-Agathe.
The Woodwind
family!
The woodwind family includes flutes, clarinets, oboes and bassoons. These instruments are placed in the center of the orchestra. Like the strings, the instruments are placed in order of register, with the highest pitched instruments placed to the left of the section and the lowest pitched instruments to the right. The woodwinds are placed in front of the brass and percussion instruments, as they are less sonorous than the latter. Listen to Mathieu Harel talk about the woodwind family:
Martin Gougeon, stage director
Martin Gougeon is a multidisciplinary creator. He played the cello in his youth, and subsequently chose to express himself through theatre. Since completing his training as an actor, he has appeared in over 30 theatrical productions. Martin is also an active director and author, with some twenty comedies to his credit. He also had the pleasure of travelling to Chile to write and direct the circus show Klima. As an author, Martin Gougeon has published 15 volumes of the collections Petit théâtre and Bêtes de scène, two of which have been translated into Spanish and distributed in South America. He has served as Artistic Director of the Théâtre de l’Ancien presbytère since 2001.

The OSM closed the show with Beethoven's Ode to Joy, featuring over 1000 choristers and 4 international soloists: Measha Brueggergosman, Susan Platts, Gordon Gietz and John Relyea.
Jared Miller, on Buzzer Beater
When I was asked to write this piece to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, it was specified that the piece be inspired by some aspect of Canada. So, I took a walk in the park near my apartment to brainstorm ideas. While I walked I listed everything I could think of that makes Canada great. I kept getting distracted by the sounds of kids nearly playing basketball. Then, a flashback from fourth grade gym class … basketball was invented by Canadian physician, James Naismith! The resulting piece, Buzzer Beater fuses a variety of music and real basketball sounds to depict the excitement of a game in its final two minutes, as one team tries to score the winning basket. Will they succeed though? And before the clock runs out?

Symphony no. 2
Joseph Bologne's Symphony no. 2 is in fact the three-part overture to his opera L'amant anonyme (The Anonymous Lover). It is his only opera for which the music has survived. This comic opera in 2 acts, which incorporates ballet, tells the story of Léontine, a young widow, who receives letters and gifts from a secret admirer.

Javelin
This piece was composed in 1994. Michael Torke received a commission from the Atlanta Olympic Committee to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city's orchestra, and in anticipation of the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The piece is composed in a single movement and lasts around 9 minutes. Torke chose the name of the piece once it was finished, inspired by certain "flashes" and movements in the music that reminded him of this discipline.

Posture
Part of training as a musician is having and maintaining good posture. Good posture helps prevent injury and improves instrument performance.
So, what is good posture?
In general, orchestral musicians sit with their backs straight on the end of their chairs, without crossing their legs. It's important to be relaxed, while keeping your body engaged.
The Brass
family!
The brass family includes horns, trumpets, trombones and tuba. These instruments are placed at the back of the orchestra, as they are louder than the strings and woodwinds. Like the woodwinds and the strings, the brass instruments are placed in order of register, with the highest pitched instruments placed on the left and the lowest pitched instruments on the right. The javelin throw
The javelin throw is a track and field discipline in which athletes throw a javelin (a spear made of metal, fiberglass or carbon fiber). Athletes have several attempts to throw the javelin as far as possible (distance calculated in cm). The athlete makes a short run before throwing the javelin, as shown in this video.
*Important: the tip of the javelin must touch the ground first for the throw to be validated.

Musical Sports
Team Spirit vs Soloist
The sounds of sports

Listen to Hugues Tremblay talk about the percussion family:

what's the difference between the 4 disciplines? Ice dancing is performed in duets. In this discipline, skaters don't do jumps (like the triple axel), but they can do lifts. Conversely, singles and pairs skating must include jumps. Synchronized skating is performed in groups of 8 to 16 people.
The weight of instruments
Although many instruments are placed on the floor for playing, they have to be transported from point A to point B for rehearsals and concerts, so musicians have to get used to carrying them. Here are the weights of some of the orchestra's instruments:
Songs of the
crowd!
During games between sports teams, the crowd can play a very important role in supporting their team with songs of encouragement and celebration, as with the song Ole, ole, ole, olein this video.
*Note that some sports don't allow the crowd to make noise, such as tennis, where the public must remain silent when the ball is in play.

The Brass

The javelin throw
The javelin throw is a track and field discipline in which athletes throw a javelin (a spear made of metal, fiberglass or carbon fiber). Athletes have several attempts to throw the javelin as far as possible (distance calculated in cm). The athlete makes a short run before throwing the javelin, as shown in this video.
*Important: the tip of the javelin must touch the ground first for the throw to be validated.
