The history of the euro

16 December 1995

The name "euro" is officially adopted in Madrid.

1 June 1998

The European Central Bank is established.

1 January 1999

The euro is launched as an invisible currency for accounting and electronic payments, replacing the former European Currency Unit (ECU).

1 January 2002

Euro coins and banknotes are launched in 12 EU countries. It’s the biggest cash changeover in history.

1 January 2007

Slovenia joins the Eurozone.

Cyprus and Malta join the Eurozone.

11 Oct. 2008

An extraordinary summit is held in Paris in reaction to the financial crisis.

Slovakia joins the Eurozone.

The Eurozone countries and the IMF agree to a €110 billion loan for Greece.

Estonia joins the Eurozone.

Latvia joins the Eurozone.

Croatia is the latest country to join the Eurozone.

Bulgaria is expected to join the Eurozone.
