What is Model United Nations?

Here you can include a relevant fact to highlight

MUN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda.

Here you can include arelevant fact to highlight

While playing their roles as ambassadors, student "delegates" : - make speeches - prepare draft resolutions - negotiate with allies and adversaries - resolve conflicts and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure All in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.

Here you can include arelevant fact to highlight

The agenda items discussed in committee vary at each conference. Most conferences tend to focus on current affairs issues that are being discussed in the United Nations. These issues can highlight political, financial and/or social concerns. However, the task of some committees might be to address hypothetical concerns or issues from the past or future.

There are different committees and specialized agencies inside the UN. The students (delegates) can work - per pair - or alone and represent one country. When a school participates at a conference, it receives both country assignments and committees. (e.g. of the Decorum video). When a country and a committee is assigned to a school, the delegates start to work on position papers (see recap sheet «How to write a position paper? »)

What are the benefits of MUN?

Preparing and participating in a MUN helps students develop leadership skills, research, writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, coming up with solutions that are acceptable to a majority of the representatives also inculcates skills of negotiation, conflict resolution, and cooperation.

Usually durint the debates on the 2d day, a crisis happens: - someone representing the UN arrives and explains there is a situation currently going on and the UN has to vote a resolution on it - This person can stay to answer question from the delegates if they want more details - The delegates have to stop their ongiong debate and have 1 hour to solve the crisis
