he Magna Charta Libertatum

The Magna Charta Libertatum is a royal charter signed in 1215 by John Lackland which limited royal powers, defined feudal obligations between the King and the barons, and guaranteed a number of rights. It includes a preamble and 63 clauses.

No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land.

HABEAS CORPUS

As Pope Innocent III declared the Magna Charta invalid, civil war started. To keep the peace, it was reissued many times during the XIII century.

ohn Lackland

was an able administrator interested in law and government but he neither trusted others nor was trusted by them. Heavy taxation, disputes with the Church (John was excommunicated by the Pope in 1209) and unsuccessful attempts to recover his French possessions made him unpopular. Many of his barons rebelled, and in June 1215 they forced King John to sign a peace treaty, the Magna Charta, accepting their reforms.
