Hi!
My name is Sarah. My friends and I will be guiding you through this course.
Let's begin!

What is Zion Healthshare?
Medical cost sharing is a community where members agree to share medical expenses through voluntary giving. Unlike insurance, the focus of Zion HealthShare is to provide an avenue for members to help each other bear their immediate healthcare expenses.
Let's learn more!
Back
10
Why choose Zion Healthshare over traditional insurance?
Since the 1980s, health share programs have grown as a low-cost alternative to health insurance. A health share is a group of people who have agreed to help with each other’s medical costs.
10
What is an IUA?
Your IUA level is your “Initial Unshareable Amount” that you agree to pay per medical need, before the Zion Healthshare Community contributes in paying the balance. This is similar to what insurance companies call “deductibles”.
10
When signing up for Zion Healthshare, you select between 3 IUA levels:
$5,000 IUA
$2,500 IUA
$1,000 IUA

How Does Zion Healthshare work?
Step 1: Submit a share request. Unless it is an emergency, contact Zion Healthshare prior to any medical appointment. They will help you navigate your medical experience. Step 2: When asked to confirm your insurance information, let the office know you are a Self-Pay Patient. Step 3: Share with the community. When your medical need is determined eligible for sharing, Zion HealthShare will work with you to coordinate provider payments. As you receive bills from your provider, request itemized statements and send them through your member portal.
10
Good news!
Because Zion Healthshare is not insurance, this gives you the freedom to work with any provider, without network restrictions!
10
Important!
When submitting a medical event, Zion’s does not have annual or lifetime sharing maximums, so you don’t have to worry about anything resetting and having to pay your IUA level again for the same event, at the start of the new year!
10
Some medical treatments may continue for years while others may be resolved quickly. Medical need requests are closed after going 12 months without needing treatment.
Next step
What happens if you have a lot of medical need requests in one year?
Each household will pay a maximum of 3 IUA’s in any 12-month period. After the 3rd IUA is paid, new medical requests will not be subject to the IUA, until 12 months have passed since the first medical need was opened. Why? Because Zion Healthshare does not want any member to bear more of a burden than they can manage.
Next
Who is eligible?
The employee, plus spouse, and dependent, unmarried children under age 26.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
A pre-membership medical condition is any illness or injury for which a person has:
- been examined,
- been diagnosed,
- taken medication,
- had symptoms, or
- received medical treatment
Within the 24 months prior to their membership start date. Sharing requests related to pre-membership medical conditions are only shareable if the condition was regarded as cured and did not require treatment or present symptoms for 24 months prior to the membership start date.
Pre-Membership Medical Conditions Phase-in Period
Pre-Membership Medical Conditions have a phase-in period wherein sharing is limited. Starting from the membership start date, there is a one-year waiting period before pre-membership medical conditions are shareable. After the waiting period, the shareable amount increases with each membership year.
Shareable amounts for pre-membership medical conditions:
Year one: $0 (waiting period)Year two: $25,000 maximum per sharing request Year three: $50,000 maximum per sharing request Year four: $125,000 maximum per sharing request After four years of membership, expenses related to pre-membership medical conditions will be shareable up to a maximum of $125,000 in a 12-month period.
Exceptions for High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, & Diabetes
High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are not considered pre-membership medical conditions as long as: 1. The member has not been hospitalized for the condition in the 12 months prior to joining, and 2. The member is able to control the condition through medication or diet.
