Journal Prompts
Directions:
Choose one (1) of the following journal prompts to answer in at least 250 words.
- What qualities do you look for in friends? Which of these qualities did Benvolio and Mercutio share? Which of the two would you prefer to have as a friend?
- Romeo and Juliet see each other despite the fact they know their parents would disapprove. Would their relationship have ended differently if they had tried to reason with their respective parents?
- Juliet is never seen with any friends of her own age. If she had a close friend, what would Juliet say about Romeo and their relationship to her? (This can be a letter, face-to-face conversation, Twitter posts, Facebook messages).
- Is Romeo in love with Rosaline or is it infatuation? What is the difference? If you had a friend who was in a similar situation to Romeo's what advice would you give that person? (This can be a letter, face-to-face conversation, Twitter posts, Facebook messages).
- When Romeo and Juliet meet at the party they fall in "love at first sight". Considering their age, is this real love? What is your opinion of "love at first sight?"
- Romeo seems to be fickle with his affections. First he loves Rosaline and then he loves Juliet with a passion. How would you treat Romeo if he were your friend? What advice would you give him based on your knowledge of "fickle" friendships?
Movie Poster & Synopsis

Directions: Cast a movie for your own version of Romeo and Juliet! Create a movie poster to advertise your film and include a 1-2 paragraph synopsis (overview) of your movie! For this choice, you may use the construction paper in my classroom, Google Docs, Google Slides, or any other software you'd like (just make sure you can save and share your work!)

Answer all parts of the following essay prompt: Who is responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? Friar Laurence? The two lovers themselves? Their parents? Do a number of people share the blame? To what extent can these people be held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Analyze the actions of the character(s) you think are responsible for the lovers’ deaths. Essay Requirements:
- Introductory Paragraph (10 pts)
- Summarize the play in 2-3 sentences
- Introduce your stance (who you feel is responsible for Romeo and Juliet's deaths)
- Body Paragraphs (25 pts)
- Provide evidence from the text to support your stance (Because this character did/said... they are clearly responsible. If they had...)
- To what extent can others be held responsible for their deaths? Support with evidence and your own reasoning.
- Concluding Paragraph (10 pts)
- Restate your thesis
- Reminder: don't include new information--only restate what you have already stated
