The architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano begins the project in Barcelona, Spain using the donations of the public. The then young Gaudi was but an assistant to the project. Pictured above is the first year of construction of the basilica.

Only one year after its construction begins, cheif architect Villar resigns due to disagreements with his partners on the project. Gaudi ends up taking the reins. The following decade, the crypt and the apse are constructed and Gaudi's personal vision slowly starts to take form.
1883
Gaudi becomes cheif architect
Up until this point, the Sagrada Familia was completely funded by donation. This meant that over the years, construction would often slow or even stop depending on the interest of the people. Sometimes only a single wealthy patron would be keeping the construction financed. As the building developed however, it began to garner interest from around the world and of important figures and events including multiple popes and Spanish religious celebrations. With this increased money and popularity, construction sped up and continued toward completion.
1940s-1980s
Construction continues and tourism increases
After a lifetime of work and planning, Gaudi dies. A project such as the Sagrada Familia was never meant to be finished within a single lifetime, but Gaudi made sure to complete the main facade, as pictured above, to inspire the generations after him to continue work on it. This image is roughly how it would have looked in the decade before his death.
1926
Gaudi's death
After a several year slowdown caused by Covid-19, the Sagrada Familia nears completion. Both the exterior and interior reflect the bold and naturalistic style of Gaudi. Hard edges and monochrome surfaces are mixed together with motis of fruits, leaves, trees, and seashells. The basilica is already the second most visited in the world, and once the final element, the central tower, is completed, it will be the tallest church in the entire world.
