What is an ecosystem?
Geographic area where different organisms, along with weather and landscape interact with each other
Biotope
Biocenosis
Ecosystems are not isolated entities, they are coupled by energy and matter flows
All the ecosystems are connected with each other. The union of various ecosystems is called BIOME
Biomes are organized based on the plants or animals that live in there.
Ecosystems are not static
Functions of Ecosystems
- Regulates essential ecological processes, suports life systems and renders stability
- Cycling of matter and energy
- Balance the trophic levels
Energy in the Ecosystem
The primary source of energy is the solar energy
Energy
Matter
Solar energy is captured by plants which will be transformed into chemical energy through photosynthesis
Trophic levels
- Food chain is a series of organisms that will eat one another.
- Organized in categories known as trophic levels
Decomposers
There are three kinds of food chain:
- Grazing food chain: common food chain
- Saprophytic food chain: the decaying matter is the lowest level and is followed by the decomposers
- Parasitic food chain: large organisms are exploited and the energy passes to a smaller one.
Food webs
- Graphical representation of the interconnection between food chains.
- Arrows follow the flow of energy (where the energy is being transferred)
Food webs
And the flow of matter in the environment?
Biogeochemical cycles
Homework (OneNote)
BIODIVERSITY
The total amount of genes, species and ecosystems of a particular region
BIODIVERSITY in MEXICO
Mexico is placed 4th worldwide between the megadiverse countries
Info
Tundra
Grasslands
Biome
Desert
Large geographical area defined by its vegetations, water, climates, soil and wildlife
Aquatic
Forests
Biosphere
Biosphere
Made up of all the parts of the Earth that contains life. From the bottom of the ocean to the highest mountaintop
Lithosphere
Hydrosphere
Scientists describe the Earth in terms of spheres
Atmosphere
Life can develop on air, water and soil, that is why the biosphere can measures about 20 Km. Almost all life exists between 500 m under sea level to 6 Km above it
