Progress Monitoring

To make instruction most effective, the case manager should...
  • review raw scores
  • review goal matrix
  • complete an error analysis
  • use data to inform instruction (goal instruction and SDI)
  • review data REGULARLY and revise the IEP as needed
  • utilize resources for goal instruction

01

Review Raw Scores

What does the data say?

Review Raw Data

The data shows growth. It even looks like the learner is going to reach the goal. However, overall the growth over the last 4 data points has slowed. What exactly should be practiced to increase growth?

Looking at the raw scores and corresponding graphs can show you if a learner is growing or signal if a learner may need additional supports. While the raw scores are great for showing the big picture, error analysis will help with specifics of what to instruct on.

What does the data say?

The data shows growth. It even looks like the learner is going to reach the goal before planned. The current instruction seems to be working and should be kept.

What does the data say?

Review Raw Data

Looking at the blue dotted line that is projecting the learner's growth, this learner needs a change in their instruction or goal to be able to make progress. However, I can't tell exactly how to help them looking at the raw data.

Looking at the raw scores and corresponding graph can show you if a learner is growing or signal that a learner may need additional supports. While the raw scores are great for showing the big picture, error analysis will help with specifics of what to instruct on.

What does the data say?

The learner's scores are not consistent and the projection line is barely going to meet the goal in a year's time. This learner needs some type of change, but how?

02

Review the Matrix

Review the Goal Matrix

When it comes to the red "Making Progress - Not Adequate" or "Maintaining" you may want to change up the goal instruction.

Remember the Red is not necessarily bad, it just means that action is needed. Such as "Goal Mastered", is good but the IEP now needs revised.

Error Analysis

Error Analysis

Error analysis is a method commonly used to identify the cause of learner errors when they make consistent mistakes. The more detailed the learner's work, the more detail you can put into your error analysis. It is recommended to encourage learners to show their work in order to find where the learner needs support.

What does the score tell you? Reading Fluency Example

Show answer

We know that the learner needs to increase accuracy as he has 38 errors, but the score alone does not show us the detail of where his errors are.

Error Analysis Reading Fluency Example

What type of error?

When you take out the skipped lines, the other missed words are multi-syllable. Thus, he seems to have mastered high-frequency words and is able to decode single-syllabic words consistently.

What type of error?

How does this guide my instruction?

The learner skipped the entire line.

Looking at the error analysis, we can see that our learner needs to work on reading each line and not skipping as well as multi-syllabic words. This is key for making his instruction around the multi-syllable words and practicing reading each line. This learner may benefit from some sort of line reader to help him not skip lines (SDI).

What does the score tell you? Written Expression Example

Show answer

Based on the score the learner has 46 CWS with 84% accuracy. I know the learner still needs to grow, but how?

I’m looking forward to spring because... ^it’s ^my ^favorite ^season^. ^The ^reason ^why ^it’s^ my ^favorite ^season _because ^we ^don’t ^have ^snowstorms ^or^ bad ^weather^. ^The ^other _thing’s_ I ^like^ to^ do ^in ^spring _is _to ^go ^outside ^to ^workout & play _sport’s_ with ^my _friend’s_.^ Also^, ^I ^like^ to ^spend ^time ^with^ my ^family ^on ^spring ^break^. 46 CWS 46 / 55 = 84%

1 Omission (is) error

3 Plural vs possessive errors

What type of error?

How does this guide my instruction?

1 subject verb agreement error

The error analysis shows us that the learner's goal based instruction should focus on plural vs possessive errors as this is a common error.

What does the score tell you? Math Example

Show answer

Based on the score of 20% accuracy, this probe may lead us to believe that the learner is struggling with order of operation in general and may need a lot of support.

Error Analysis Math Example

What type of error?

What type of error?

8 errors related to not correctly simplifing an exponent
1 division error

How does this guide my instruction?

...

The error analysis shows us that the learner's goal based instruction should focus on exponents. Overall, the learner understands the order of operations and therefore does not need instruction on that.

Pro Tip: As we are trying to focus goals around learners needs and not over arching grade level skills, error analysis can also be used to develop more tailored goals.

YOU TRY: Error Analysis

Review the Essay provided by Joey Johnson, 7th grade learner. His goal is based on the PA Writing Rubric. Complete the Error Analysis to answer the following question box:

Let review...

The error analysis shows that this learner made a lot of spelling errors, and the learner lacks organization of paragraphs. To help the learner grow, we should focus on spelling and paragraph formation.

YOU TRY: Error Analysis

What type of errors?

Every problem was missed due to decimal placement errors.

How does this guide my instruction?

The error analysis shows us that the learner's goal based instruction should focus on decimal placement while dividing. Overall, the learner understands the process of division.

Informing Instruction

We want to make sure our instruction is targeting the learner's needs.

Use error analysis to help write SDIs

Drive Instruction based on error analysis

Use error analysis to help find goal areas.

It will also help you develop goals that are relevant for the learner. Example: Instead of a broad Math computation goal, use error analysis to see what skills to develop. Then write a goal based on the specific needs of the learner.

Error analysis will allow you to see what SDI is really needed for a learner.

Focus on the greatest area of need based on the error analysis.

To be most effective, you need to review learner data REGULARLY.
