The Summary Assignment

ENGL1301

Main Points

No need to get every last detail. Hit the wave tops of the most important elements.

Show

Use your voice to illustrate what the piece is about.

Ownership

A summary is YOUR product. Direct quotes may be necessary, but use them sparingly.

Formatting

Despite everyone's dicomfort, MLA/APA formatting can kill your grade. Take time early to really hone these skills, especially citations.

Pathos

Logos

Ethos

You'll learn about these three main appeals; Credibility, Logic, and Emotion (top, right, left). If you're really good, find out about the fourth appeal on your own.

These are the sections of IMRAD papers, in order, clockwise from the top. Use these sections to break down the assignment and structure your paper.

Introduction

Each successive assignment in this course is meant to be used as a building block for the next one, culminating in the foundation you'll need for the big projects.

&

Your Audience

People who read your work have their own agenda and perspectives. Knowing the intent and nuance of the intended audience can enhance the connection between your paper and the reader.

Your Message

You will need to understand why it is important for a specific audience to read your work. Answering the question of, "So What?" within your paper will guide the focus of your writing.

Think of a summary as though you're having a conversation with a friend and tell them what the piece is.
Summaries are not guides or walkthroughs. While you must hit technical standards, your voice is what makes it powerful.

Nobody starts out as the best in the business. Give your best effort and learn from mistakes. Seek guidance and offer the same.

Practice & Training

  • Grammar proficiency
  • Formatting standards
  • Creativity within structure
  • Focused content
  • Balance of writing elements

Every student in your class has something to contribute. Collaborating and exchanging construcctive criticism is essential to expanding your writing abilities.

Mr. Lee once said, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." If necessary, work with your professor to revisit the fundamentals.

What have you mastered? What can be improved?
