What do we call "art theft"?
Art theft consist in illicit removal of a work of art, such as a painting, or part of it, which is usually attempted to be resold or, more rarely, used for extortion purposes.
How is Italy committed?
As a preventive measure, the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Command was established in 1969, preceding by one year the UNESCO convention in Paris, which invited, the Member States to adopt the appropriate measures to prevent the acquisition of illicity exported goods and encourage the recovery of stolen ones, as well as establishing a specific service aimed at this
How does France act?
The basic law on the protection of cultural heritage, introduced in 1913, provides for the classification in special registers. In this way any property that has an historical or artistic value is irremovable, because it's considered a national treasure
Mona lisa's case
On August 21 1911, Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece disappered from its place in the Louvre. French investigators groped in the dark for a very long time, before finding out behind the theft there were sentimental and patrioctic reasons; for this reason Vincenzo Peruggia, an italian employee in the museum, wanted to return it to Italy.
Gardner museum's events
Boston, Isabella Steward-Gardner Museum, March 17, 1990.two fake policeman stole 13 works, worth 500 thousand dollars in 81 minutes, of which 11 directly from the frames. After more than 30 years, everything is still shrouded in mystery. After the theft no painting took the place of a previous one as a reminder of the great loss.
Getty museum, an open case
Recently the J. Paul Getty Museum returns some objects from its collection to Italy, after recent research revealed that they have been stolen or illegally extracted following excavation. The most important of this is known as "Orpheus and the Sirens" but through the years Getty also resisted to a lot of return request, such as "Lysippos' Victorius Athlete"
Works of art always have been stolen because owning them is sign of power, prestige and strength. In history are recurring events involving famous personalities such as Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte.
