The number of recorded executions increased by 53% in 2022, according to a new report released by Amnesty International. These figures exclude China, where data on the death penalty is classified as a state secret and where Amnesty estimates thousands of executions have been carried out.

Close to three-quarters of the world has now abolished the death penalty in law or practice, Amnesty says. Fifty-five countries still retain and implement the death penalty.

arguments for

  • deterrence
The threat of execution could dissuade people from committing serious crimes, in particular murders of a premeditated nature.
  • families deserve justice
Friends and family of murder victims will live with that loss for the rest of their lives.
  • the Bible says 'Eye for an eye'
It is not important to prevent crime but to avenge it.

arguments against

  • humanness
A society that respects life does not deliberately kill human beings
  • capital punishment is not a deterrent to capital crimes
it may even be an incitement to criminal violence; if severe punishment can deter crime, then permanent imprisonment is severe enough to deter any rational person from committing a violent crime.
  • irreversibility
It is irreversible and mistakes happen. Since 1973, for example, more than 191 prisoners sent to death row in the USA have later been exonerated or released from death row on grounds of innocence.
  • It is used as a political tool
The authorities in some countries use the death penalty to punish political opponents.

We are firlmly convinced that the death penalty should be abolished globally. Capital punishment violates the fundamental principles of human rights and justice. There are much more efficiet forms of punishment.
