INTRODUCTION
The problematic for this chapter is :Can a timeless character still be reinvented ? Timeless = intemporel Time (le temps) + less (moins, sans) Timeless : something that is not affected by the passage of time or changes in fashion. Other timeless characters : Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Sleeping beauty...). Can you think of any Sherlock Holmes adaptations (movie, TV series, books...) ?

Read the text1. Introduce the text (use the methodology T-A-N-D-I-S) and present the characters, Where they are and what is this scene.
The answer
This document is an extract/ an excerpt from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle entitled A Study in Scarlet. It was published in 1887.This is the first meeting between Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes (line 1 : "introducing" = Stamford présente Watson à Holmes ce qui signifie qu'ils ne se connaissaient pas avant !) The characters : Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes and Stamford. The place : The scene takes place in London, probably in a laboratory.

In the first fifteen lines, you learn two new things about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Can you find them ?
The answer
DR. WATSON :- Dr. Watson went to Afghanistan (line 5)- He is impressed by Sherlock ("It is interesting chemically, no doubt") SHERLOCK HOLMES : - He has an excellent sense of deduction (he can say Watson went to Afghanistan just by watching him) - He has invented a test for blood (line 10 "discovery of mine")

Take a good look at the text, what makes this scene, this dialogue so realistic ? What elements make you think "ok, this could have totally happened in real life" ?
The answer
To make the excerpt more realistic, Conan Doyle uses scientific elements such as blood testing. The experiment conducted by Holmes seems real because it is well described and full of details.

How would you define the personality of Sherlock Holmes? Use the vocabulary on your "fiche séquence" and note (relever) words in the text
Sherlock definitely seems clever because he has invented a new scientific test for blood. He is arrogant: "it is the most practical medico-legal discovery for years." He also seems passionate : "He seized me by the coat-sleeve in his eagerness" Yet, he is also a bit weird : “chuckling to himself” or “Ha! Ha! He cried, clapping his hands…”

: The sun rises in the East *Une habitude Ex. : The postman usually comes before noon *Une caractéristique Ex. : Beckham runs past Henry, shoots and … scores his second goal! Ex. : The train leaves at 4 p.m
Ex. : I'm visiting my parents next Sunday *Une intention (souvent avec un verbe de mouvement) Ex. : I'm moving to Canada in September (move = déménager, verbe de mouvement) *Ce qui se passe ces temps-ci *Décrire une image, une scèneEx. : Prices are going up; the value of the Euro is going down. Ex. Ex. Ex. : She's always nagging me > Elle me harcèle constamment !

Read the text and answer GROUPE 1 - questions a, b c Once you've done that, watch the trailer of the TV adapation (video below the text). You should recognize the main character and her job, but this time focus on How different from the character of Sherlock Holmes that we have seen so far ?
The answer
GROUPE 1 - questions 1.a The main character is Mma Ramotswe, a female detective. She's the first lady detective in her country, Botswana. 1 b. The scene takes place in Africa. What strikes us is the fact that her office is so small, minimalist and outdated. She uses an old typewriter instead of computers and smartphones. 1 c. She shares “human intuition and intelligence” with Sherlock. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHERLOCK HOLMES AND MMA RAMOTSWE In the trailer, Mma Ramotswe seems strong, fearless as her male friend says to her "I'm worried about you" implying she puts herself in danger. She also seems more sociable and likeable than Sherlock Holmes. In the TV series Sherlock, the femal police officer says to Watson that Sherlock Holmes doesn't have any friends" whereas Mma Ramotswe is surrounded by people.
