European Union

1958

What is the European Union?

The European Union is a unique association of 27 European countries, the so-called Member States or EU countries, which together represent a large part of the European continent. Approximately 447 million people live in the EU countries, or about 6 % of the world's population.

United in diversity

This is the motto of the EU and sums up the values of the Union.

All EU countries, although each has its own culture, language and traditions, share the same common values and must respect them as members of the European Union.

European values

The EU is founded on six fundamental values that are the basis of our society:

  • respect for human dignity
  • freedom
  • democracy
  • equality
  • rule of law
  • respect for human rights, including the rights of minorities

Italy

Italy is a Member State of the European Union, located in southern and western Europe. Italy is a unitary parliamentary republic and has a population of around 59 million, making it the third largest state in the European Union. The capital city is Rome.

Italy's role in the EU

  • Italy has been considered a major western power since its unification in 1860.
  • Italy's main allies are the NATO countries and the EU states.
  • Italy was admitted to the United Nations in 1955, and is also a member and strong supporter of a large number of international organisations.
  • Italy is an important player in the Mediterranean region.
  • Italy has a special role in the Christian world.
  • Furthermore, Italy is currently commanding several multinational forces and has many troops deployed in the Middle East and around the world for peacekeeping missions and to combat organised crime, illegal drug trade and terrorism.

European integration

What is meant?

European integration is the process of industrial, political, legal, economic, social and cultural integration of all or some states of Europe.

European integration

The Schuman Declaration represents the beginning of the European integration process. It is a speech given in Paris on 9 May 1950 by Robert Schuman and it is considered to be the first official political speech in which the concept of Europe as an economic and political union between the various European states appears.

Italy in the European integration process

Italy has always played a fundamental role by supporting the process of European integration, which is considered fundamental to promoting and achieving the goals of peace, freedom, security and well-being for Italians and Europeans in general.

Italy in the European integration process

Italy has accompanied the process of European integration in all its phases, making Rome an essential crossroads in the history of the construction of Europe unity. Italy, therefore sees EU membership as a historic choice that has united the continent after decades of wars and that today allows Member States to face global challenges that individual countries would not be able to deal with on their own.

Advantages or disadvantages?

Joining the European Union is a decision of profund significance for any European nation, as it involves a complex interaction of economic, political and cultural factors. Choosing to become an EU Member State brings with it a number of distinct advantages and disadvantages, each with implications for a country's economy, governance and identity.

Italy's integration to the EU has promoted political stability within the other Member States.

Thanks to the EU single market, not only people, but also goods can move freely in Italy.

Which are the disadvantages?

While being part of the European Union is an advantage, there are some negative aspects.

Migration concerns

The migration phenomenon has been affecting Italy for some time now.
