Water on Earth

Objectives

Start

Water everywhere!

Water is all around us! It's in oceans, lakes, rivers, and even in the air as clouds. We drink water to stay healthy, and plants use it to grow big and strong.

Water changes!

Sometimes water is a liquid, like when we drink it or swim in it. Other times, it can be solid, like ice in the freezer or snow on the ground.

Water cycle

Water moves around the Earth in a big cycle. It evaporates from oceans, lakes, and even puddles when the sun warms it up. Then it goes up in the sky and becomes clouds. When these clouds get heavy, they let out water as rain or snow.

Melting

When you heat ice, it turns into water. This change from solid to liquid is called melting.

Freezing

When you cool water, it turns into ice. This change from liquid to solid is called freezing.

Boiling

When you heat water a lot, it bubbles and turns into steam. This change from liquid to gas is called boiling.

Evaporation

When the sun warms a puddle, for example, the water slowly turns into an invisible gas called water vapor. This change from liquid to gas without boiling is called evaporation.

Condensation

You can see this when the steam from a hot shower hits a cold mirror and turns into tiny water droplets. This change from gas to liquid is called condensation.

Let's practice

This is a map of Earth. The map uses color to show where water, land, and ice are found.
