- College is, in simple terms, a place that provides higher level education. Most people refer to it as an "an educational institution." As we move further in the game, please keep those terms in mind as they will pop up more often!
- Harvard “was the first institution of higher education in the English colonies,” (The Carolina Story: “Early American Colleges”). It is otherwise known as a college and was founded in 1636.
- The Gilded Age caused “many branches of advanced learning” to bloom in America. Unlike the current time where only certain majors are popular, the 1870s’ saw a variety of different majors that "enjoyed growth, support, and popularity,” (“The History Of Higher Education: Then And Now,” 2019).

- Along with the rise of colleges came the rising belief of the “American Dream” (Mont). Many started believing that college could help you achieve the “American Dream."
- A few popularized figures who did achieve the “American Dream” are “John D. Rockefeller” and “Andrew Carnegie.” (Mont)

- Unlike the past, in present time, only certain majors are popular and can guarentee graduates some form of return whether that is (income, opportunitiy, or fame)
- College gained popularity in the late 1800s, specifically the 1870s.
- After gaining popularity, college became a universal sort of concept. It became a norm/expectancy to go to college after graduating high school.
- Due to many factors, the original intention of college has shifted.

- The college income premium is the "extra income earned by a family whose head has a college degree" verses the income "earned by an otherwise similar family whose head does not have a college degree.”
- For anyone that were born after the 1940s, attending college is equaivalent to a failing "investment" (think of stock market or a gamble)
- Many individuals are starting to believe that college is not worth their time and effort.
- Apart from families whose head is white, other families whose head is a different "race and ethnicity born in that decade, the premium is" no different "from zero” (William R. Emmons, Ana H. Kent, and Lowell R. Ricketts)

Checkpoint
- Sometimes people forget how exhuasting learning is! College students have to learn to balance their school and personal life. Also, if they work, thats an additional stress factor.
- People often forget that depression and college students have a close link to each other due to the overwhelming stress at times. In fact, graphs and statisics show that "34.5%" of college students are affected by depression.
- When conducting an experimental test, "46.94% of the participants’ score indicated risk of mild to severe symptoms of depression..."

Checkpoint
- The college income premium was the best "incentive" for people to go to college. Thus, without that, people are starting to consider other options like trade school.
- People are also "opting not to go to college" (Barbaro) due to the high increase in negative mental health (Acharya).

- In addition, besides the lack of return in "income," there is also a lack of return in opportunities, specifically "good job opportunities" (Seltzer). This is an issue becuase many people go to college in order to get a decent job.
- The lack of job opportunities has caused unemployment and underemployment:

- Decades of studies show that "college graduates who enter the labor force during recessions have lower lifetime earnings and [less] career advancement[opportunities] " in life (kahn 2010; Oreopou-los, von Wachter, and heisz 2012). Further research shows that underemployment also shows similar results.
- Many professions call for a lot of respect. For example, teachers, nurses, doctors, and more. However, recently, many jobs are seeing a huge lack of respect or understanding in their collegeues or the general setting of the job.
- In recent years, many teachers have been on the receiving end of disrepsect from students. These actions include but are not limited to "verbal disrespect and disobedience to physical violence."

- Education and teachers should not be taken for granted as they are the second line of culitivating children for the world (first are parents). That said, teachers and students should not have a "test-givers and administrators" relationship as that can be bad for the developemnt of small children . However, they should also not be too friendly or else students won't take school as seriously.
- Aside from teachers, even in the medical field, it has seen many workers willingly leave the job due to a lack of "respect and fairness." In addition, there was a huge lack of "chances" to involve themeslves in a project or to just give feedback.

The lack of job opportunities has caused unemployment and underemployment: Unemployment refers to a person who isn't or is unable to find a job. Underemployment refers to jobs that don’t need a college degree or the work required is lower than the person's "skill level” (Abel, Deitz, and su 2014).
