Past continuous tense

The building of the past continUous

How it's build ?

The Past Continuous is formed using the past tense of the verb "to be" (was/were), followed by the "main verb in the "-ing" form. For example, for the verb "to play", the construction would be "was/were playing".

The using of the past continuous

The Use.

We use the past continuous to talk about events and temporary states that were in progress around a certain time in the past. We use the past simple to talk about events, states or habits at definite times in the past.

Exceptions

There are some exceptions.

Not all verbs are in the -ing form. These include verbs of state, feeling, perception, etc. Verbs such as see, hear, understand, hear, believe, think, suppose, like, love, hate, want, be, have, miss are included in this list and therefore cannot be used in the past continuous tense. For example, we can’t say: I was understanding him when I heard a noise.
