PROULEX PRODUCTIONS PRESENT

I hate my brother's talking during the movie. IT WAS ANNOYING.

START

the movie

What's a gerund?

What's a possessive?

ING verb

when something belongs to someone

So, what's a possessive gerund?

jack's talking my brother's playing my husband's apologizing my neighbor's listening to music late my sister's smoking etc

NEXT

so, when you want to indicate the performer of the action. You can say:

Jack's talking during the movie was annoying OR His talking during the movie was annoying.

POSSESSIVE: 'S or (MY / YOUR / HIS / HER / ITS / THEIR / OUR)

I object to his playing loud music late at night. I don't appreciate their playing video games. My son's playing videogames annoys me. Does my son's playing video games bother you? What bothers me is his not apologizing. I was really upset about his smoking indoors.

IN INFORMAL ENGLISH

IT'S ACCEPTABLE TO USE A NAME, NOUN OR AN OBJECT PRONOUN INSTEAD OF THE POSSESSIVE

I object to their playing loud music. OK I object to them playing loud music. OK I object to my neighbors' playing loud music. OK

BUT ONLY WHEN IT'S THE OBJECT OF THE SENTENCE

BUT WHEN IT'S A THE BEGINNING OF THE SENTENCE

Their playing music late is a problem. His complaining is driving me crazy. Her not apologizing makes me feel dissapointed. not Them playing music... Him playing ..

ONLY USE POSSESSIVE

THANK YOU
