WORK MOTIVATION

What is work motivation?

Work motivation refers to the ability of a company to keep its employees involved to offer maximum performance and thus achieve the business objectives set by the organization. This motivation at work is key to increasing business productivity and the team's work in the different activities they carry out, in addition to making each member feel fulfilled in their job and identify with the company's values.

Importance of work motivation.

Work motivation is one of the most important factors to achieve the objectives of an organization because it has a direct relationship with performance, productivity and collaborative work. For example, a satisfied and motivated employee can be up to 12% more productive and 31% more efficient at doing their job than a demotivated employee. For this reason, more and more organizations have begun to take concrete actions to boost work motivation, helping to increase employee satisfaction , commitment and business loyalty

Types of work motivation

Extrinsic motivation

Intrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation stands for all the things that serve as an external drive, which is classified into two categories: compensation and punishment. For compensation, it can be salary, bonuses, goods, money, and an appraisal. Punishment might include fines, blame, judgment, and many others. This side of extrinsic motivation is usually mistaken to be negative, but it has quite a lot of positivity.

Intrinsic motivation is most easily defined as those things that motivate a person with the aim of being rewarded internally. This is any activity based on personal gratification or just for the fun of it without expecting external praise.

Negative emotions have their place, and some really good organizational changes can stem from having tough conversations. However, it's important to find ways to inject positive experiences into your team's interactions to create a net positive workplace.

When employees feel motivated and valued, they are less likely to seek new job opportunities, which benefits the company by reducing turnover and maintaining continuity in work teams.

When people are unmotivated, they often feel like they lack control of the world around them, to them it may feel, as if no matter what they do, they struggle to make progress. Therefore, they tend to be reactive about situations, instead of being proactive, and take preventative measures to avoid certain situations arising. This can commonly occur in teams that are failing to work well together.

One of the most important factors that contribute to employee motivation is how often their hard work gets recognized. 70% of employees say that motivation and morale would improve massively with increased recognition from managers. After all, if an employee produces exceptional results but their hard work isn't recognized, why would they continue to be a high-performing employee?

Body language is a great indicator of an individuals state of mind, if you know how to read and judge it. However, you have to be careful here, just because someone has their arms crossed, this doesn’t guarantee that they are guarded, they may just be super chilly. None the less, people who are crossing their arms and legs may be subconsciously comforting themselves. This may be a sign of low motivation, couple this with being unwilling to pitch in, and you have an individual that needs some attention.

Extrinsic motivation example:

The sales department wasn’t performing as expected. The department head decided to motivate them and promised to give a team bonus if they achieve the month’s target goal. The monetary reward was inspiring. The team has reached the goal even earlier. This is the most common example of extrinsic motivation in the workplace.

Teamwork is one of the greatest motivators out there. Knowing that your colleagues have your back and are your cheerleaders is an amazing feeling. When your motivation dips, your teammates are right there with you, rooting for you as you complete your next project.

We've all had projects that just drag on and on, and seem to never end. It can be demoralizing to be stuck in a rut, which is why seeing how you've made visible progress feels so good. It's also a clear indicator that our work is making a difference.

When employees are motivated, they are more attentive to their surroundings and to follow safety protocols and measures, which contributes to reducing the number of workplace accidents.

Negative emotions have their place, and some really good organizational changes can stem from having tough conversations. However, it's important to find ways to inject positive experiences into your team's interactions to create a net positive workplace.

Team members that are consistently checking the time, clocking off at the earliest opportunity, and spending 30 minutes in the toilet may just be very demotivated. Whist it’s true that work never ends and there is always more to do, some tasks have more urgency than others. If people are dropping their work immediately at the end of the regular work day, it generally means they aren’t too invested in their work. Ideally team members will work harder or longer to finish an important task when it is needed. At the times when there is no impending deadline, this is when people can relax and potentially leave early to make up for the extra time they spent the week before.

When employees feel motivated, they are more engaged with their work and show a higher level of productivity.

Motivated people speak up when they have an idea, or a question. They are eager to pitch in or learn. They are willing to solve problems and own up when they are wrong. This is because they care about fulfilling their potential to the maximum and they want to contribute to the success of the team. However, when there is low motivation, you’ll see a drop off in communication.

Intrinsic motivation example:

Peter is a young footballer who loves what he does but isn’t good enough. Everybody trains for two hours a day at the stadium, but Peter takes an extra one hour after the training to do some more practice. He wants to be good at his passion, not for applause, but himself. This is a typical example of intrinsic motivation. In the end, he will get better because he is self-motivated to do so.

Motivation contributes to creating a more positive and harmonious work environment.
