Dealing with differences

The curious incident of the dog in the night time

Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger's, a form of autism. when he finds a neighbour's dog murdered he sets out on a terrifying journey

Nathan's world

Nathan is an autistic boy . At the age of nine, he lost his father with whom he had managed to develop a bond. Because he was a prodigy in mathematics, he took private lessons from a teacher, Martin Humphreys, then when he was 14, he was selected to represent Great Britain in the International Mathematics Olympiad .

The novel is narrated in the first person by Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy described as "a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties" living in Swindon, Wiltshire. Although Christopher's condition is not stated, the book's blurb refers to Asperger's syndrome (which today would be described as an autism spectrum disorder), high-functioning autism, or savant syndrome. In July 2009, Haddon wrote on his blog that "The Curious Incident is not a book about Asperger's syndrome...rather it is a novel about being different, about being an outsider, about the world view in a surprising and revealing way. The book is not specifically about a specific disorder, and that he, Haddon, is not an expert on the autism spectrum or Asperger's syndrome.

This comedy-drama, which stars Asa Butterfield, Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins, is inspired by the documentary Beautiful Young Minds by the same director; it centers on an English teenage math prodigy named Nathan who has difficulty understanding people but finds comfort in numbers. The character of Nathan is himself inspired by Daniel Lightwing.
