FRANCES GLESSNER LEE

Frances Glessner Lee (1878-1962)

Glessner Lee was born in Chicago on March 25, 1878. From a young age, Frances Glessner Lee was an avid fan of Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote “detective stories,” and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She admired the fields of law and medicine and wanted to pursue an education in t

them. Unfortunately, women could not study nor work at that time. She still dedicated herself to “reading up on criminology and collecting books and papers on the subject.” Then she met George Burgess Magrath who was studying medicine at Harvard Medical School and was particularly interested in death investigation. After her father’s death in 1936, Lee inherited a large portion of his money, which she used to donate $250,000 to Harvard University’s Department of Legal Medicine. She also gave money to the Harvard Associates in Police Science, a national organization of forensic medicine*; it has today a division dedicated to her, called the Frances Glessner Lee Homicide School. The first miniature Glessner built was of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Glessner Lee was fond of the stories of Sherlock Holmes, and his talent to observe details. Starting the building process of

These models were designed to train police officers in “the art of crime scene investigation” and to be used as tools for future crime scene investigators. She also revealed social problems such as domestic violence. Lee even influenced much of twentieth-century crime literature and crime, such as Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rope. With this influence, Lee was able to accomplish her dreams and improve the field of forensic science.

He was so drunk, he never saw it coming! I took the gun Walter keeps behind the bar and shot him!– It was all about your brother then?– I got my revenge. The Boss recruited Jamie in his gang.
