Fun fact

The world's first road made specifically for cars was paved in Queens Back in 1908, cars were still quite the novelty, sharing the busy roads with horses, carriages, wagons and plenty of people on foot, until the Long Island Motor Parkway in Hollis Hills, Queens, opened to traffic. Originally conceived of as a privately owned race course (you had to pay a toll to use it), most of the narrow two-lane road is now a bike path.

Fun facts

- The original name of New York was New Amsterdam as Dutch settlers were the first to arrive in the area around 1624. But in 1664, the English took over and renamed the city in the Duke of York’s honor. Not only that, some of the most iconic New York places had original Dutch names : Wall Street was Waal Straat, Harlem was Haarlem, and Brooklyn was Breukelen.

- The city’s nickname has an interesting story behind it. A ‘Big Apple’ referred to prizes awarded at horse racing events in the 1920s. Since the term meant “the ultimate” prize or “the best”, many musicians and journalists started referring to New York by this name. New York’s tourism board adopted The Big Apple as an official nickname in 1971. New York’s also has other nicknames : Empire City, City of Dreams, and The City That Never Sleeps.

Queens figures in term of wages confirm its reputation of a quite wealthy borough. Indeed this area of New York is great for entrepreneurs willing to start a business in a still calm environment.

  • Museum of Moving Image and Queens Museum of Art
  • In the 40s, jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, are looking for an environment quieter than Manhattan or Brooklyn.
  • L.Armstrong's can still be visitated in the dictrict of Corona

Fun fact

One of the best ice creams was established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in The Bronx. Back in the 1920s, Häagen-Dazs made its debut in this borough and was sold out of horse-drawn wagons! Starting with only three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee,

fun fact

The map of Westeros from the series Game of Thrones is modeled after Staten Island. It is surprising to know that the inspiration for the fictional world didn’t come from Europe or fairytales but from one of New York's borough. George R.R. Martin, the writer of the book series the show is based on, often gazed out his window and wondered what Staten Island was like. Later, when he started writing the "A Song of Ice and Fire series", he used the island’s shape as the model for Westeros.

The Bronx's layout allows its inhabitants to do the majority of their travel by foot with a nearly perfect score in that field. Indeed, 60% of its households does not own a car because of the walkability but also because 100% of pupils have access to a public school within 5-mile area. However, it is also well configurated for distance work or learning with a great access to internet.

Fun fact

A legend stole a plane twice, only to land it in the heart of the Apple. A drunk pilot named Tommy Fitz once stole a plane and landed it right in front of the bar he had been drinking at, on the streets of NYC. This happened in 1956, when traffic was sparse. But he went on to do it again a couple of years later to prove that he had done it the first time.

The Bronx

Criminality

The Bronx is sadly known for its high rate of criminal activity but the county is making everything in its power to overcome this issue. They are investing in security in order to protect their population and ultimately to turn this underrated borought into an atractive one.

Fun facts

- After the Brooklyn Bridge was built, city officials needed a way to show the general public that the bridge was safe, so they called P.T. Barnum and asked for help. On May 17, 1884, the famous circus founder paraded 21 elephants across the bridge proving its strength.

- Maybe this isn’t good news, but the very first credit card was issued in 1946 by John Biggins of Flatbush National Bank in Brooklyn. He offered a Charge-It program so local Brooklyn shops could extend credit to their customers.
